Vikes Top Spartans in Spring Action
Victoria outlasts TWU for 2-1 win

LANGLEY, British Columbia – The Trinity Western University women’s soccer team fell 2-1 to the visiting University of Victoria Vikes in spring soccer action Saturday afternoon at TWU.

UVIC’s keeper Kasha Gwiazda had a solid match as she turned away the Spartans on a number of quality scoring opportunities to give the 2005 CIS champs the win over the 2004 CIS champs.

Victoria’s opened the scoring in the 44th minute to take a 1-0 lead into the break.

Then in the fifth minute of the second half Victoria made it 2-0 on a kick from just outside the top of the Spartans box. The ball sailed high into the top of the TWU net.

In the 75th minute TWU’s Andrea Standerwick sent forward Carlee O’Brien in on the Victoria back line. O’Brien got past the Vikes defenders and slotted the ball into the lower left corner of the Victoria net to make the score 2-1 for the Vikes.

TWU had sustained pressure for the remaining 15 minutes of the match, but they were unable to get the equalizer.

Next up for the Spartans is Simon Fraser University on Tuesday, March 21. Kickoff at TWU is set for 7 p.m.
