FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Spartans Notch Three against Clan
TWU tops Burnaby’s SFU 3-0 in spring soccer friendly
LANGLEY, British Columbia – Trinity Western University’s Hilary Braacx did the scoring while teammate Andrea McLachlan controlled the play as the Spartans’ women’s soccer team defeated the Simon Fraser University Clan 3-0 in Tuesday evening’s friendly at TWU’s Spartan Field Complex.
Braacx opened the scoring in the fifth minute when she converted a corner kick from Andrea Standerwick. Standerwick sent the corner kick to the far post where Braacx went high to head the ball off of SFU’s keeper, Marissa Antoniassi and into the top left corner of the Clan net.
The Spartans and the Clan battled back and forth for the remainder of the half, but neither team was able to find the back of the net.
Leading 1-0 at the start of the second half, the Spartans came out strong to start the half. TWU was rewarded in the third minute of the half (48th) on a strong individual effort by Melanie Ingwersen. Ingwersen took the ball in the midfield battled past one SFU midfielder, then split the defense and sent a low roller into the left side of the Clan net to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead.
The middle of the second half belonged to the Clan. SFU maintained possession for extended periods and put consistent pressure on the TWU defenders.
In the 84th minute Braacx got her second of the night. Christine Gerig set up Braacx on a strong run up the left side of the pitch. Gerig turned the corner on SFU’s right back and sent the ball into the SFU box. Braacx took the pass and one-timed it into the lower left side of the SFU net.
The Clan’s Hailey Rawlings led the way for the visitors with two shots, while the Spartans’ Braacx, Standerwick and Alexis Heinz each had two shots...
