2007 Summer Universiade
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CANADA CLAIMS 2-1 VICTORY OVER NEW ZEALAND IN WOMEN’S SOCCER
BANGKOK, Thailand (CIS) – Canada’s women’s soccer team defeated New Zealand 2-1 in their first match of the consolation round. The Canadian squad will now be competing in the 9-12 classification.
“We are glad to get the win,” said head coach Steve Johnson of the University of Ottawa. “We created a lot of opportunities, particularly in the first half - breakaways and nice combinations to set up attacking pieces. We just didn’t score enough to relax a bit during the game – it was tight until the end. New Zealand, with a break, could’ve tied it up. Hot conditions, slow game – I think both teams made mental mistakes.”
The Canadians were first to get on the scoreboard with a goal from Leanne Huck (Hatchet Lake, N.S.) of Dalhousie University.
New Zealand’s Leanne Marie Tiffen was quick to reply tying things within five minutes of play.
Determined to advance to the next round, the Canadians took a one-goal lead into the locker room with a second goal from Huck.
“Today’s game was really hot,” said Amy Bobb (Vancouver, B.C.) of University of British Columbia. “We controlled most of the game, but we were unlucky to score more goals than we did.”
Canada held New Zealand scoreless in the second half to advance to the next round. The women will compete against Poland to claim top spot in the 9-12 classification on August 15.
