SOCCER STAR TESAN SIGNS WITH SPARTANS WOMEN'S PROGRAM

LANGLEY, British Columbia - Trinity Western University women's soccer head coach Graham Roxburgh and the Spartans women's soccer program are thrilled to announce the commitment to TWU of Alicia Tesan. Tesan, a native of Vancouver who is currently a member of the Vancouver Whitecaps Prospects team, will join the Spartans to begin the 2009 fall season.

"I am absolutely delighted that Alicia has committed her schooling and soccer future to TWU. She is the type of player that can immediately impact a game. I believe she will be an outstanding player in the CIS for TWU," said Roxburgh. "She has great pace, and the ability to run at players, as well as a great soccer sense that makes players around her better. She has proven with the Whitecaps that she can be a very good forward, both in her ability to score and create chances for others. She possesses so many qualities as a player which will make her a great player to watch in the coming years."

The 5'4" Notre Dame Secondary School honours student, who plans to study Kinesiology when she enters TWU next fall, has been the recipient of numerous awards for her talent on the soccer pitch. She scored the winning goal to give here high school the bronze medal at the 2008 AA Championships and led her team to the 2008 B.C. Catholic School's Senior Girls Tournament. She has been a BC Provincial team member since the U12 team and recently led her U15 West Vancouver Club team to the Provincial championship and the Coastal Cup championship.

"What impressed me as much with Alicia is not just her ability on the field, but who she is as a person. At TWU, we don't just want to recruit great talent, but also we want to bring in players that will make our squad a better place and will be a great representative of our program and school off the field," said Roxburgh. "There is no doubt that Alicia fits this description. The more and more I met with she and her family, I was impressed that we have added a great person to our program."

Tesan, in her second season with the Prospects, led the team in scoring with 11 goals, which was good enough for fourth place in the PCSL in scoring. In 2008 as a grade 11 student Tesan was named MVP of her senior girls' high school team and received tournament MVP, team MVP and tied for Golden Boot at the 2008 BC Catholic Schools' Senor Girls' soccer tournament.

"With the great young talent that we already have in our program, the addition of Alicia will add to the growing sense that we are building a very strong squad of players here for a great future," added Roxburgh.

The Trinity Western University women's soccer program won Canada West titles in 2004 and 2006 and the CIS championship in 2004. This past season the Spartans finished the season ranked No. 10 in the CIS. As hosts of next year's 2008 CIS Women's Soccer National Championships the Spartans will be making their third national championship appearance in five years. The Spartans entered Canada West and the CIS in 2001.
