OTTAWA (CIS) - Trinity Western soccer player Daniela Gerig and Calgary hockey player Torrie Wheat are the Canadian University Sport Mitsubishi female and male athletes of the week for the period ending Sept. 28, 2008.

"Daniela has the ability to score goals and be a dangerous forward in the CIS, and she has shown it this past weekend. Her finishes were fantastic and her goal against Manitoba sealed an important win for our program," said TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. "Not only am I pleased with her scoring touch, but she is involving other players and has worked extremely hard in the past few weeks. I am delighted that she has been recognized with this award."

Gerig, a second-year human kinetics major from Fort Langley, B.C., exploded for six goals over the weekend, including a Trinity Western single-game record five-goal outing, as the No. 9-ranked Spartans (4-0-2) remained undefeated on the season with a 9-0 domination of Regina and an impressive 3-0 shutout of No. 5 Manitoba. The 19-year-old forward, now tied for the Canada West lead with seven tallies, scored five times against Regina on Friday, including the game-winner two minutes into the contest, and added an insurance marker against the Canada West-leading Bisons on Saturday.

Cape Breton soccer player Jessica MacDermid, Concordia rugby player Jackie Tittley and Trent rugby player Lianne Schumacher were also nominated for the women's award.

Wheat, a third-year business student from Nanaimo, B.C., kicked off the 2008-09 hockey season with a six-goal weekend as the Dinos (1-1) split a two-game series against UBC. The six-foot-two, 180-pound forward, who came to the Dinos from the WHL's Everett Silvertips, opened the campaign with a two-goal effort in a 4-3 loss to the ‘Birds on Friday before scoring four times, including a natural hat trick in the third period, in a 10-1 win on Saturday.
