FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SPARTANS SIGN WHITECAPS RESERVE TEAM CAPTAIN
LANGLEY, British Columbia - The 2008 CIS champion Trinity Western University women's soccer team got stronger for the 2009 season as head coach Graham Roxburgh announced today the signing of the Vancouver Whitecaps Reserve Team captain Natalie Boyd to play for the Spartans beginning in the 2009 season.
"Not only is Natalie an exceptional player, but as I have gotten to know her more in the past few months, I am equally impressed with who she is as a person. There is no doubt she will have an impact on our team and within our program both on and off the field," commented Roxburgh. "She possesses the ability to control games, covers a lot of ground in the midfield and I believe has a very natural understanding of the game. In watching her play the past number of months, you realize that she has the ability to impact games and players around her, which is a special quality to have. I am delighted that she has chosen TWU as the place to pursue both academic and athletic success in her future. Natalie is another great addition to our program!"
The 5'5" Surrey, B.C. native has been a leader at every level that she has played at. In addition to being the captain of the Whitecaps Reserves she has also been captain of the BC Provincial U12, U13, U14 and U16 teams.
Boyd has received numerous individual and team awards. She has played two caps with the Canadian U17 national team, earned a silver medal with the U18 Burnaby Titans at the Canadian National Championships, her U18 Sereno White club were Arizona State Champions and were ranked No. 1 in the USA and were semi-finalist in Region IV - Hawaii, her U17 Surrey United Rage earned Provincial Bronze and won the 2007 Coastal Cup Championship and her U13 Provincial team won the Rocky Mountain Western Championship Gold medal.
The Sullivan Heights Secondary School four time honour roll student plans to study Sport Management when she enters TWU in the fall. She commented on her choice to attend TWU: "It's about quality over quantity, being a smaller school you have more to prove, and I like that challenge."
Boyd, who has the ability to play anywhere on the pitch, will be joining Whitecaps teammates Nikki Wright and Tessa Meyer when she dons the Spartans colours this fall. Boyd joined the Whitecaps Reserve in 2007-08 and was named captain for the 2008-09 season.
Since entering the CIS in 2002 the Spartans women's soccer program has rapidly become one of the premier programs in the CIS. They have won two national championships, in 2008 and 2004, and two Canada West championships, in 2006 and 2004, and have been in the national championship three of the last five years where they have accumulated a 7-1-1 record.
