KRISTEN FUNK NAMED CANADA WEST ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

EDMONTON (CW)
– Trinity Western goalkeeper Kristen Funk helped lead the Spartans to their second consecutive CIS championship by posting two shutout wins, while giving up only one goal in three matches, scoring two shootout goals and making two shootout saves.

The Calgary native, who was named the tournament’s All-Star ’keeper, got her first shutout of the tournament in the opening 2-0 win over UPEI. She then followed it up with a 2-1 semifinal shootout win over Queen’s, where she also made seven saves. She capped it off with a 1-0 shootout win over No. 1 Montreal in the gold medal match.

The Human Kinetics student was most impressive in the shootouts. She started both as the opening shooter for the Spartans and quickly put TWU up 1-0 in each shootout. But what set her apart was that in both matches she followed it up with spectacular saves to help seal the victory’s for TWU who went on to win both shootouts by 5-3 and 4-2 margins to earn the CIS crown.
