Spartans Women's Soccer Team on the Ice

It might be off season for the Trinity Western University Spartans Women's Soccer Team, but they are still finding ways to make headlines. Donning their team colors, the Spartans shuffled out onto the ice rink at the Langley Events Centre on Sunday January 17th and dropped the puck for the Langley Chiefs' game against the Alberni Valley Bulldogs. The Chiefs invited the women's team to honour the Spartans' on winning their 3rd national soccer title, which they achieved in November when they defeated the Montreal Carabins 1-0 in the gold-medal match of the 2009 CIS women's soccer championship.

"It was great for the team to be out in the community and I am grateful that the Langley Chiefs extended the invite and willingness to recognize fellow athletes from Langley and the community. The team was very appreciative of being recognized and I was impressed by the level of professionalism that the Chiefs put on in order to honour our National Championship,” commented TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. “As a program and indeed with Spartans athletics, we desire to be more and more a part of the Langley Community and to participate in events and programs that enhance our community. It was a unique and special opportunity!"

Finding more ways to be involved with the community, Spartan athletes will also be helping with the kids-oriented "Try-it" sports event, held at the Langley Event Centre February 8th from 1- 5 pm in conjunction with the Olympic Torch Relay celebration.
