CIS Championship Banner Raising Friday night at LEC

LANGLEY, B.C.
– This Friday night Trinity Western's 2009 CIS national women's soccer team will be honoured in a special ceremony at half time of the men's basketball game.

The Spartan players, coaching staff and family and friends will be at the Langely Events Centre to watch as their 2009 CIS championship banner is raised to honour their accomplishments from this past fall.

The CIS title is the third for the Spartans and their second in as many years. TWU has earned CIS gold in 2004, 2008 and 2009.

The Spatans women's soccer team and their head coach Graham Roxburgh are now one of the top women's soccer teams in CIS history.

Over their nine seasons in the CIS, the Spartans women's soccer teams have made the Canada West play-offs eight times, where they posted a record of 10-7-0, which is impressive in itself. But if you are the opposing coach what you don’t want to have happen is to face the Spartans at the CIS Championships.

In their four national championship appearances only one team has beaten the Spartans and that was York University, who defeated TWU 1-0 in the opening round of the 2006 championships in Victoria. Since then the Spartans and Roxburgh have rattled off eight straight wins for an overall record of 10-1-1 and a .861 winning percentage. The winning percentage leads the CIS in championship winning percentage with UBC second at .806 and no other team is even close. TWU leads in wins per appearance at 2.50 with UBC also second at 2.27. TWU also leads in championships won per appearance: 75 percent of the time that the Spartans get to the championship tournament they win it, Calgary is second at 50 percent, with UBC third at 45 percent.

The Spartans, who currently have an eight game winning streak at the CIS championships and are within four games of the record 12 game streak held by British Columbia, will most likely have an opportunity to get to the championship again next season.
