LANGLEY, British Columbia – Trinity Western University women’s soccer midfielder Kaleigh Henry shaved her golden locks on the morning of Wednesday, February 17 in an effort to raise funds for the Vancouver Women’s Shelter and for her mission’s trip with the TWU women’s soccer team to Paraguay this May. In addition she will be donating her hair to the Little Princess Trust a non-profit organization, founded in the United Kingdom, which makes wigs from human hair that is donated for young girls undergoing chemotherapy.

“Throughout history there has been a spiritual significance when someone cuts off their hair.  It is seen as being reborn.  I feel that I have been spiritually reborn and would like to externalize this feeling.  I am so happy that I am able to donate my hair to help people as well.  This act has an immense amount of significance for me and I am overjoyed that so much good can come from it through fundraising and giving the hair to young girls undergoing chemo,” commented Henry.  “There is destitution all around us, not just in poverty-stricken countries, and I feel it is important to recognize that.”

The White Rock, B.C. native and third year business student chose Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent – the season of preparation for the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday, because of the symbolism of her faith.

The honour of cutting Kaleigh's hair went to members of the Spartan women's soccer team and lead stylist Leah Carroll.

During the mission’s trip to Paraguay, which leaves for 12 days in early May, the women’s soccer team will be playing high quality soccer against local teams as well as be involved with helping out in orphanages, soccer camps for impoverished children and helping out in soup kitchens.
