RECRUIT SIGNING
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SPARTANS SIGN CALGARY STAR
LANGLEY, British Columbia – Trinity Western’s women’s soccer team continued to stock the cupboard with high-level talent Tuesday with the signing of recruit Alessandra Oliverio of Calgary, who will join the Spartans in the fall of 2011.
The 5-foot-4 centre midfielder, who will graduate this year from Bearspaw Christian School, comes to Trinity Western having trained at the National Training Center Prairies for the past four years and having played on a number of Alberta provincial teams.
"I am delighted that Alessandra has joined our program for the coming seasons,” said TWU coach Graham Roxburgh. “She possesses so much of the qualities that we are looking for in our program both as a player and more importantly as a person.
“Alessandra has very good skills and has attacking qualities that will allow her to play both as a midfielder and a front runner. She has the ability to beat players, and the vision to create for others. She plays a similar style to what we embrace at TWU, the desire to be creative and to possess so she will fit right in with the squad she is joining. In my interactions with Alessandra I have continued to be impressed with who she is off the field in terms of her character and leadership qualities. We have recruited a player that I believe will help our program’s future both on and off the field."
Most recently, Oliverio helped her indoor U18 Juventus team, playing out of Calgary’s Southwest United Soccer Association, win a gold medal at the 2011 Tier 1 provincial championship. She has now won two provincial championships with SWU as her U14 won gold in 2007.
“I decided on Trinity because the whole school has a great atmosphere and I am very excited to be part of such a great team,” said Oliverio, who plans to study psychology at Trinity Western.
As Roxburgh’s third announced recruit thus far, Oliverio will join Canadian U20 National Team defender/midfielder Vanessa Kovacs and Alberta Summer Games forward Sarah-Kim Bergeron.
After an upset loss in the Canada West semi-final the Spartans, who finished second in CW last season and who have been in the CIS top ten for 33 of the last 38 rankings, including 22 straight weeks, since September 2007, are looking to regain their form that saw them win back-to-back CIS championships in 2008 and 2009.
