FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
GERIG ADDED TO FISU TEAM, SANTEMA UNABLE TO PLAY DUE TO HEALTH REASONS
LANGLEY, British Columbia – Trinity Western University women’s soccer forward Daniela Gerig (Langley, B.C.) got the call she was hoping for this week as the Spartans leading point-getter from last year learned she will join five of her TWU teammates this August as they represent Canada at the FISU Games in Shenzhen, China Aug. 12-23.
With Victoria striker Kendra Flock (Calgary, Alta.) unable to make the trip, Gerig, who initially didn’t make the team, was slotted in as her replacement and will now link up with fellow Spartans Kristen Funk (G), Jillian Dietrich (D), Natalie Boyd (M), Melissa Mobilio (M) and Nikki Wright (F), along with TWU coaches Graham Roxburgh (Canada’s head coach) and Neil Turner (Canada’s goalie and video coach), as they don the red and white.
Unfortunately, at the same time Gerig was added to the team, Trinity Western’s Kristen Santema (Coquitlam, B.C.) was subtracted as the Spartans defender was forced to concede her spot due to health reasons. Victoria’s Shayla Behrens (Victoria, B.C.) will take her spot on the back line.
Canada will compete in the preliminary round in Pool A against tournament host China, reigning bronze medalist Great Britain and Taiwan.
The team will hold a final training camp including three exhibition games in Vancouver from July 30 to August 5 before departing for China.
