SPARTANS HOST VIKES AND CASCADES THIS WEEKEND AT ROGERS PARK
LANGLEY, British Columbia –This weekend the Spartans women’s soccer team will take on the University of Victoria Vikes and the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades at home at Rogers Park in Langley, B.C. The game against the Vikes takes place on October 7 at 5 p.m. while the game versus the Cascades kicks off at 5 p.m. on Saturday, October 8.

The Spartans come into this weekend on fire, having gained the Canada West lead and extended their winning streak to an impressive six games.
Last weekend against a pair of prairie teams the Spartans showed their offensive prowess by scoring a combined total of eight goals by an assorted cast of players. The first game against Regina saw four goals by four different players.
Natalie Boyd went top shelf in the first half to score her first goal and what would be the game winner. This was followed up with goals by Tessa Meyer, Nikki Wright and Daniela Gerig. This brings Gerig’s goal total to 4 on the season.
The shutout was given to Kristen Funk for her fourth of the season.
In the match against the Manitoba Bison the Spartans again found the back of the net four times. Melissa Mobilio scored twice in the first half, bringing her goal total up to four. This was followed up by a header goal from Jennifer Castillo and a goal from Daniela Gerig. Manitoba responded with one goal but it was not enough to overcome the Spartans effort.
The last time the Spartans beat the Vikes was October 9, 2010 with a 4-0 effort. The Spartans last win over the UFV Cascades was October 10, 2009 when the Spartans shutout the Cascades 2-0. Last season the Cascades stopped the Spartans run for an unprecedented third straight CIS title by defeating TWU in the opening round of the CW play-offs.

The Vikes look good to improve upon last season’s seventh place Canada West finish. At this point in the season the Vikes are well above .500 and sit in fifth place.
Last weekend the Vikes hosted the Calgary Dinos and the Lethbridge Pronghorns in Victoria. The Dinos turned out to be an extremely well matched team for the Vikes, and the teams tied 1-1. The Vikes goal was scored by Lindsay Hoetzel on a penalty shot in the 82nd minute that tied the game. Keeper Stephanie Parker finished with four saves on the night.
The following night was a different story as the Vikes overwhelmed the Pronghorns with a 5-1 game. The goals did not start until the latter part of the first half but it sparked an extremely dominant game by the Vikes. By the end of the first half the score was 2-0 for the Vikes with goals by Cassie Dennis and Shannon Elder.
In the second half the Vikes continued with their strong offensive play with goals by Nathalie Scharf, Maryse Reichgeld, and Aja Battie. Lethbridge managed one goal in the second half to ruin keeper Stephanie Parker’s shutout bid.
With this run the Vikes now manage a four game unbeaten streak coming into this game with the Spartans. The last time that the Vikes beat the Spartans was October 9, 2009 when the Vikes edged the Spartans 2-1.

The UFV Cascades women’s soccer team won their first ever CIS medal last year as they claimed the Bronze. Coming into this year the Cascades were CIS ranked No. 7, but as the season has progressed the Cascades have dropped a few matches and fallen off the CIS rankings.
Last weekend the Cascades played to a weekend split at home in Abbotsford, B.C. The Cascades first opponent was the Lethbridge Pronghorns, who were easily shut down by the Cascades, 2-0. Goals by the Cascades were scored by Chelsea Steffen from Ellen Kuyer and by Megan Webster on a penalty kick. Chantelle Biagioni got the shutout without recording a single save.
The following night the Cascades were unable to overcome the Calgary Dinos in a one goal match. The Dinos were able to sneak one past keeper Chantelle Biagioni off of a corner kick. This first half goal was the only goal of the game, despite the fact that the Cascades managed more shots on goal to the tune of 12-3.
The last time regular season victory of the Cascades over the Spartans was October 3, 2010, when the Cascades managed a 2-1 edge over the Spartans. The last time these two teams played was in the Canada West Final Four when the Cascades again edged out the Spartans, this time on a 3-2 win that went to penalty kicks.
