WOMEN’S SOCCER SIGNS CALGARY STAR STRIKER

LANGLEY, British Columbia –
The Trinity Western women’s soccer team has once again mined gold in Calgary as coach Graham Roxburgh announced Friday the signing of yet another dynamic athlete in striker Krista Gommeringer, who will join the Spartans in the fall of 2012.

The 5-foot-6 forward, who will graduate from Lord Beaverbrook High School this spring, comes to Langley with plenty of pedigree having already been named a Calgary Minor Soccer Association All-Star in 2008, 2010 and 2011 as well as league MVP in 2011 while playing with Calgary South West United Juventus.

Gommeringer has trained at Calgary’s National Training Centre for the last two years while also playing her club soccer with Calgary Alliance of the Alberta Major Soccer League. In 2011 with Calgary Alliance, Gommeringer was tied for sixth in league scoring with eight goals.

“We are so excited that Krista has committed her future to TWU and our women’s soccer program,” Roxburgh said. “Ever since we first watched her train and then compete we saw the quality in her ability and the potential for her to be an impact player at the CIS level.  Krista has excellent technical ability, a great understanding and feel for the game and she has a natural goal-scoring ability in and around the penalty area. We feel we have added a top notch forward who will fit very well into our squad and who will add quality to our attacking play.

“She has such an enthusiasm for the game and a desire to link up with other strikers and attacking players both as a target and a playmaker. She is very gifted on the ball and has shown to be a constant threat with set pieces and her ball striking ability.  She will fit in very nicely with our desire to possess and attack with numbers.

“I am equally excited about what I believe she will add to the culture of our program because of who she is as a person as well as her dedication to getting better, her competitive nature and the kind of commitment she has shown to her academics and athletic career so far.”

Away from the field, Gommeringer has been an honours student in Grade 10, 11 and 12.

“I wanted to come to Trinity Western because it is a top class university with a top class women’s soccer team,” Gommeringer said.

Gommeringer will be the sixth Calgary product on the Spartans women’s soccer roster and will join former Calgary teammates Sarah-Kim Bergeron and Alessandra Oliverio at TWU.

In 2011, the Trinity Western women’s soccer team finished the regular season atop the Canada West standings with 12-1-1 record and then went on to win the Canada West banner before falling to McGill in the CIS National Championship quarter-finals and ultimately finishing sixth overall.
