Season Ends With Victory

Langley, British Columbia – This afternoon was the final game of the season for the Spartan women’s soccer team and they ended on a positive note, winning 1-0 over the visiting Calgary Dinos.

Krysta Kons notched her second goal in two games—the other being the game-tying goal on Thursday night against Lethbridge—to lead her team to victory. Krysta’s goal (63rd minute) was the result of a great hustle play by TWU’s Angela Trauter as she tried to light a fire under her team early in the second half. After an errant pass was sent into open space down the right wing, Trauter raced after it and managed to keep it inbounds. She stepped around the defender with a quick move and laid the ball to Kons’ feet at the top of the box. Kons made no mistake pounding the ball into the back of the net, giving Calgary’s Charlotte Sullivan no chance for the stop.

The first half was a battle of the midfield with neither team getting much going offensively, and only six shots (three each) had been taken by the break. The Spartan women had a couple of quality chances early on by Ashlee Davison (9th minute) and Brittany Heinrich (15th minute), but were unable to connect with the back of the net.

Both teams looked sluggish to open the second half, and although the Spartans looked livelier after their goal, it was the Dinos who poured on the offensive pressure to get the equalizer. TWU was forced to defend for much of the rest of the half, but they weathered the storm of Calgary shots as Angela Garriott had another solid performance in net.

“It was a good way to finish our season,” commented TWU coach Graham Roxburgh. “We played a good team today and I felt we deserved the result. Our team showed heart and togetherness. There were also some great individual performances by Krysta Kons, Brittany Heinrich and Erin Marie Higgins.”

The Spartan women finish with a 6-6-2 record and fourth place in Canada West.

Game Notes: Calgary outshot TWU 13-9…the Spartans had 8 corner kicks to the Dinos’ 1…Spartan keeper Angela Garriott had five saves on the night to notch her fifth shutout of the season…
