TWU's O'Brien scores twice in victory
LANGLEY, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University Spartan women opened their 2005-06 preseason with a solid 4-0 win over the visiting University College of the Fraser Valley. The Cascades, who will enter Canada West league play next season, were overmatched as the defending CIS national champions outshot the visitors from Abbotsford 26-4.
It took 28 minutes and 10 shots before the Spartans could find the back of the Cascade net. TWU forward Carlee O'Brien (Nanaimo, BC) opened the scoring, putting TWU ahead on a goal in the 28th minute. O'Brien split the defense and pushed the ball past UCFV keeper Ashley Martin (Kamloops, BC) and into the lower left hand corner of the net.
TWU forward Ashlee Davison (5th yr, Maple Ridge, BC) made it 2-0 less than three minutes later on a nearly identical goal to O'Brien's.
O'Brien made the score 3-0 at the half, notching her second of the match when she turned off of a feed from teammate Lindsay Rohla and found the right corner of the net.
TWU rookie forward Melanie Ingwersen (Abbotsford, BC) made the score 4-0 in the 63rd minute. Ingwersen scored her first goal as a Spartan by splitting two defenders in the five-yard box and slotting the ball into the lower right side of the net.
Fraser Valley had an opportunity to get on the scoresheet late in the second half, but TWU keeper Alison Penner (1st yr, Abbotsford, BC) was able to make the stop and preserve her first career shutout as a member of the Spartans.
Next up for the Spartans is a scrimmage against Capilano College on Thursday, September 1. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 pm at TWU. TWU's next match is at the University of the Puget Sound on Saturday, September 3 at 4pm. The Spartans open Canada West league play on September 14 at the University of British Columbia.
