Unbeaten Streak Snapped
TWU women's soccer drops match 1-0 to Victoria Vikes
LANGLEY, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University women's soccer team had their unbeaten streak snapped at 14 matches with Friday evening 1-0 loss to the visiting University of Victoria Vikes.
The Vikes had control of the play for much of the first half as they outshot the Spartans 10-1. Victoria's early pressure finally paid off in the 35th minute when midfielder Mariel Solsberg (3rd yr, Vancouver, BC) took advantage of a TWU defensive miscue in the box. Solsberg quickly jumped on the loose ball after a miss-handled ball by TWU keeper Ali Penner (1st yr, Abbotsford, BC) and knocked it into the back of the Spartan net.
Trailing 1-0 at the half the Spartans came out strong in the second half. TWU outshot Victoria 6-3 in the second period and had a number of quality chances late, but they were unable to find the equalizer.
The loss drops the Spartans to 0-1-1 in Canada West conference play, while the win moves Victoria to 1-0-0.
Next up for the Spartans is University of Saskatchewan on Thursday, September 22. Match time at TWU is scheduled for 5 pm. The Vikes will now have a day off before traveling to Vancouver to play the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds on Sunday, September 18.
Match Notes: the Vikes outshot the Spartans 13-7...UVIC Keeper Jillian Carruthers (3rd yr, Saskatoon, SK) made two saves to earn the win, while TWU's Ali Penner made nine saves in the loss...
