Spartans Headed Back to Post Season
TWU's 3-0 win over Lethbridge clinches final Canada West playoff spot

LANGLEY, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University women's soccer team clinched the final Canada West playoff spot with a solid 3-0 win over the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns Thursday night at TWU's Spartan Field. The Spartans are now a first round playoff win away from defender their CIS national title at this year's CIS National Championships in Edmonton, AB.

"I'm absolutely delighted with the way we played tonight," said TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. "We had good contributions from a number of players; Angela Trauter was fantastic in the midfield, which allowed us to control them while enabling us to move the ball around nicely. I'm very happy with the way we responded after a tough road trip. Now it's time to get ready for the second season."

Despite dominating the chances in the first half, TWU outshot Lethbridge 12-3; the Spartans did not get on the scoresheet until the 45th minute of the first half.

Lindsay Rohla (3rd yr, Langley, BC) put the Spartans up 1-0 at the half when she converted on a TWU free kick from just outside the Lethbridge penalty area. The Spartans were awarded the kick when forward Ashlee Davison (5th yr, Maple Ridge, BC) was taken down from behind less than a meter from the box.

Carlee O'Brien (3rd yr, forward, Nanaimo, BC) put the Spartans up 2-0 in the 73rd minute. O'Brien was the beneficiary of a well struck free kick by teammate Alexis Heinz (5th yr, forward, Surrey, BC). Lethbridge keeper Megan Lumley (Lethbridge, AB) was unable to hold on to the original shot and O'Brien was able to pounce on the rebound and knock it into the open net.

O'Brien returned the favour to Heinz in the 90th minute. Canada West's leading scorer got her 10th of the season as she hammered the O'Brien feed into the back of the Pronghorn net.

TWU keeper Ali Penner (1st yr, Abbotsford, BC) stopped three Pronghorn shots to earn her sixth shut out and seventh win of the season. Lethbridge's Megan Lumley made ten saves in the loss.

TWU will play their final match of the regular season Saturday afternoon against the University of Calgary. Match time against the Dinos is set for 1 pm. The match will be the final home game for TWU seniors Alexis Heinz, Angela Trauter and Ashlee Davison.

A win by the Dinos means that TWU will finish in fourth place and open Canada West playoffs against UBC. A win by the Spartans will give TWU third place, which will match them up against Victoria.

Match Notes: TWU outshot Lethbridge 20-4...Lethbridge had 21 fouls to TWU's 15...CIS has changed the championship structure to single match elimination and increased the field from six teams to eight. One of the two extra spots goes to the Canada West silver medalists...
