TWU Spartans (1) vs. the University of Victoria (2) - Shoot out 3-2

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Spartans Fall
Victoria tops TWU 3-2 in PK to win 2-1 and advance to CIS

CALGARY, Alberta - There will be a new women's soccer Canadian Interuniversity Sport champion in 2005 as the TWU Spartans lost 2-1 on penalties to the Victoria Vikes who clinched a spot in the Canada West Conference Final and the National Championships with the win. The Vikes, who lost on penalties to TWU in last year's Canada West tournament, put in a spirited effort on a cold and windy afternoon in Calgary, and with the top two Canada West teams advancing to the National Championships next weekend in Edmonton, they will now await their opponent in the Canada West final knowing that they've booked their trip to the big show.

"We played with heart and desire," said TWU Head Coach Graham Roxburgh. "We played the best that we possibly could and were so close to heading back to Nationals. I'm disappointed in the loss, but I'm not disappointed in how we played."

The first chance of the game came 15 minutes into the first half when Carlee O'Brien made an elegant run down the flank and crossed in to Melanie Ingwersen who got a weak shot against Victoria keeper Kasia Gwiazda.

Five minutes later, Victoria almost got the first goal when Cheryl Bjorgan's shot from the top of the box went just over the crossbar.

In the 25^th minute, Ingwersen found herself at the far post with the ball at her feet after a corner kick, but her low shot was saved. Three minutes later, she was foiled again, when she shot the ball at the keeper after collecting a cross in the middle of the box.

The deadlock was broken in first half injury time when Marlesa Manson put one in from the top of the box after a scramble.

In the second half, TWU came out looking for an equalizer and got one as Alexis Heinz scored in the 50^th minute from inside the box.

With the score 1-1, Victoria's Moira Hood almost volleyed in a shot from inside the box but she was thwarted by TWU's Ali Penner.

In the 80^th minute, the Spartans came close again as an Ashlee Davison shot from about 25 meters out was tipped into the crossbar by a diving Gwiazda..

With the game in extra time, Davison almost scored again on a header in the 93^rd minute, and Victoria once more came close in the 100th minute on a free kick that was deflected out by Penner.

With the score tied 1-1, the game went to penalty kicks and Victoria's Kasia Gwiazda saved four of the six shots she faced to clinch the Victory for the Vikes. Carey Gustafson Liz Hansen and Sarah Cameron beat TWU's Ali Penner on Victoria's last three kicks, while Andrea Standerwick and Alexis Heinz scored for the Spartans.

With the win, Victoria moves to the Canada West Final against the winner of Calgary/UBC at 1:30 p.m. Sunday afternoon. TWU will play the loser in the third place match at 11:00a.m. All games take place at the West Campus Varsity Soccer Pitch.
