Heinrich Scores Lone TWU Goal as Spartans Fall 4-1 to Oregon State
CORVALLIS, Oregon – The Trinity Western University women’s soccer team dropped their second match of the preseason 4-1 to NCAA Division I Oregon State University Beavers Saturday night in Corvallis, Oregon. The loss drops the Spartans to 0-1-1 in preseason play, while the Beavers are 1-0-0.
“We battled hard and worked hard and with a young inexperienced team we did well in stages,” said TWU Head Coach Graham Roxburgh. “I was pleased that after a week of training that we were able to keep it together against a very organized team. Stephanie Stewart (5th year, defender, Langley, B.C.) was a standout for us on defense and Lindsay Rohla (4th year, midfield, Langley, B.C.) played well in the midfield.”
Fourth year midfielder Jen Crump (Santa Maria, Calif.) got the Beavers on the board in the ninth minute. She took a corner kick from the right, and bent it perfectly so that it found its way over the Spartans goalkeeper and inside the far post for a goal.
In the 20th minute, second year defender McKenna Martindale (Lake Oswego, Ore.) sent a long ball from OSU’s defensive end. On the other side of the midfield stripe, first year forward Emily Henshaw (Hillsboro, Ore.) raced past the Trinity Western defense, won the ball and continued on to the goal, creating a one-on-one with the Spartan goalkeeper. Henshaw scored easily for the two-goal advantage.
Trinity Western pulled a goal back almost immediately to start the second half. Midfielder Katie Smart (4th year, Langley, B.C.) took a free kick from about 35 yards out on the right side, and her pass was headed in at the far post by defender Brittany Heinrich (4th yr, Kelowna, B.C.) in the 48th minute.
But Crump struck again just over a minute later. Again from the right side, but this time on the other end of the field, she bent another corner kick toward the goal with her left foot. This one went through the hands of the Spartan goalkeeper, giving OSU a 3-1 lead in the 49th minute.
Crump’s final goal came in the 85th minute, as Henshaw got the ball to Crump, who curled a hard shot over the goalkeeper’s head from 25 yards away.
Next up for the Spartans is at Point Loma Nazarene on Wed. August 23. OSU opens the regular season next week at the Washington State Cougar Classic, where the Beavers will play Gonzaga on Friday (Aug. 25) and UNLV on Sunday (Aug. 27).
Match Notes: OSU outshot TWU 16-4...the Beavers had five corner kicks, while the Spartans had none...Nikki Turner (1st year, Langley, B.C) played the firs half in goal for the Spartans, while Veronika Rogina (1st year, Surrey, B.C.) played the second half...Melissa Onstad played 62 minutes for OSU, while Ashley Wood played 28 minutes in net for the Beavers...
