FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
California Road Trip Starts with 3-2 Loss to Point Loma
SAN DIEGO, California. – The Trinity Western University women’s soccer team began their California leg of their preseason road trip with a 3-2 loss to the Point Loma Nazarene Sea Lions Wednesday afternoon on Point Loma’s San Diego campus.
“We got out played and out hustled and we have to be better,” said TWU Head Coach Graham Roxburgh. “We have a lot of things to work on because we are young and even though we were a little tired from our travel we still have to learn from this experience.”
Point Loma, who finished last year as the 10th ranked team in the NAIA, got on the score board early with a goal in the third minute. The Sea Lions took advantage of a Spartan miscue and scored off of a goal mouth scramble.
TWU fought back to get into the match. Their efforts were rewarded midway through the half when TWU forward Dana DuMerton (2nd yr, Abbotsford, B.C.) got taken down in the penalty area by a Point Loma defender. TWU’s Lindsay Rohla (4th yr, midfield, Langley, B.C.) scored on the penalty to tie the match at 1-1.
Just before the half time whistle blew the Sea Lions regained their one goal lead after they took advantage of a TWU defensive breakdown.
The Sea Lions got the insurance goal midway through the second half to make it 3-1 for Point Loma.
A short while later the Spartans Rebecca Ferguson (1st yr, forward/midfield, Calgary, Alta.) made a pretty run down the left side of the park and beat the Sea Lions outside defender. Ferguson then hit a square ball into the box to a waiting Kelli Anne McCabe (1st yr, forward/midfield, Tswassen, B.C.). McCabe took the ball and slotted it home to notch her first goal as a Spartan.
Next up for the Spartans is tomorrow afternoon at Azusa Pacific University. Match time in Azusa, California is set for 3:00 pm.
