Spartans Tie Eagles to End Preseason

LA MIRADA, California
- The Trinity Western University women’s soccer team tied Biola University 0-0 in double overtime Saturday night in La Mirada, California. The match was the final preseason match of the season for the 0-2-2 Spartans.

The match was a defensive battle as both teams limited their opponent’s quality opportunities. TWU finished the match with five shots, while Biola finished with nine.

TWU’s Dana DuMerton (2nd year, Abbotsford, B.C.) had the best chance for the Spartans in the 13th minute when she was sent in alone on Biola’s Keri Schulz (Bend, OR). But DuMerton’s shot went wide of the post.

Biola’s best chance came late in regulation. In the 88th minute, junior defender Brandi Johannsen (Mission Viejo, Calif.) lofted a great cross into the box, but the Spartans first year keeper, Veronika Rogina (Surrey, B.C.) made an amazing stop on the Eagles senior forward Jordan Bishop’s (Edmonds, Wash.) point-blank blast.

That was the last either team would have at a quality scoring chance as the game ended with just one shot attempted in the 20 minutes of overtime.

Biola’s Schulz made just one save on the night in recording her first shutout of the season. While Rogina made three saves for the Spartans.

Today’s match was the first of the season for the Eagles (0-0-1).

Next up for the TWU is their Canada West conference opener at the University of Manitoba on Saturday, September 9. Match time is set for 12:00 p.m. in Winnipeg. Biola continues its season-opening home stand with a match against Oklahoma Baptist on Thursday (Aug. 31) at 5:00 p.m. on Barbour Field.
