SPARTANS AND CASCADES DRAW
TWU holds an 18 to 4 edge in shots over UCFV

LANGLEY, British Columbia
- The Trinity Western University women’s soccer team tied the University College of the Fraser Valley 0-0 Saturday night at TWU’s Spartan Field. The Spartans out-shot the Cascades 18 to 4 but were unable to get a ball into the back of the net.

The Cascades came out playing hard and worked hard to match the Spartans work rate around the park. Each team had decent opportunities in the first half, but neither team was able to get a ball into the net.

The Spartans started the second half more energized and carried the play to the Cascades. TWU controlled the second half of the match as UCFV never threatened the Spartans' net over the final 45 minutes. The Spartans finished the half with a 12-2 edge in shots.

TWU had their best chance of the match in the 52nd minute when Spartan midfielder Lindsey Rohla (Langley) was pulled down from behind as she went in on the Cascades net as a result the Spartans were awarded the penalty kick. TWU’s Dana DuMerton (Abbotsford) was stopped on the PK as Angela Garriott (Campbell River) dove to her left to make the save and keep the match scoreless.

UCFV was forced to play the final 21 minutes down a player when Kristina Habbas (Brandon, BC) received her second card of the match.

As the half progressed to the final whistle the Spartans continued to increase their presence in the offensive end of the park.

It looked like TWU would finally get a goal in the final two minutes of the match. Fraser Valley keeper Angela Garriott was roaming all over the box chasing the ball down. With 1:30 remaining TWU’s Melanie Ingwersen (Abbotsford) caught Garriott 15 yards outside of her box. Ingwersen sent a ball towards the top left side of the Cascades net. But UCFV defender Angela French (Aldergrove) headed the ball off the line to keep the match scoreless.

Garriott played the full match and made eight saves to earn the tie, while TWU’s Nikki Turner (Langley) and Veronika Rogina (Surrey) played the first and second halves respectively for the Spartans.

Dana DuMerton led all players with four shots – three on goal, while Tauren Stonehouse (Maple Ridge) led the Cascades with two shots – one on goal.

The tie gives the Spartans a 4-1-2 record, while the Cascades move to 2-2-3.

The Spartans are now on the road for three weeks. Next week they play at the University of Victoria on Fri. Oct. 6 then at the University of British Columbia on Sat. Oct. 7. Their next home match is the final weekend of league play when they will host the University of Saskatchewan on Friday, Oct. 27 and the University of Alberta on Saturday, Oct. 28.

Match Notes: TWU defender Britney Heinrich (Kelowna) was solid on the back line. The fourth year defender consistently broke-up any threat that the Cascades were looking to build....Spartan midfielder Lindsay Rohla was one of the most dangerous players on the field. Her distribution was solid and her timely runs put pressure on the UCFV net for much of the match...
