LATE SPARTANS GOAL LEAVES CASCADES REELING

ABBOTSFORD, BC
- Trinity Western University netted the game winner in the 87th minute, as the University College of the Fraser Valley Cascades fell 2-1 to the visiting Spartans Saturday afternoon at Rotary Stadium.

Spartans’ (5-3-2) sophomore Melanie Ingwersen (Abbotsford) scored the game winner in the 87th minute, banging a loose ball into the left side to complete Trinity Western’s come-from-behind victory over the Cascades (2-5-3).

“I’m relieved that we came out of a tricky game with a win,” said TWU Head Coach Graham Roxburgh. “We had a number of opportunities to get ahead in the match but we were unable to convert on our chances. We were lacking a bit in our execution and as a result we are still not able to score on the chances that we are generating.”

Ingwersen’s first of the season was the second straight by the Spartans, overcoming a one-goal deficit. Fraser Valley opened the scoring four minutes into the second half with Kristen VanderPauw (Maple Ridge) scoring on a penalty kick attempt, for her second of the season. The Cascades were awarded the PK attempt after a foul was committed inside the box.

With the 1-0 lead the Cascades went on the defensive, but the Spartans were happy to be the aggressor. Trinity Western pressured the ball and kept on the attack, not allowing the Cascades outside their own 35. Trinity Western had a flurry of chances on five corner kick attempts coming in a two-minute span, before Dana DuMerton (Abbotsford) tied the match in the 74th minute.

Fraser Valley was never able to recover the swagger they displayed in a scoreless first half that saw both sides exchange excellent scoring chances. Near the end of the first half Trinity Western’s Lindsay Rohla (Langley) drilled a 20-yard strike off the crossbar.

The Cascades mustered one final attack near the 90th minute. Tauren Stonehouse’s (Maple Ridge) corner kick attempt toed the goal line but the ball was batted out by the Spartans stopper.

Next up for the Spartans is a non-conference friendly at Simon Fraser University on Tuesday. Match time is set for 4:00 p.m. The Spartans next league match is Saturday, October 21 at the University of Lethbridge. Match time is set for 12:00 p.m.

Match Notes: TWU keeper Nikki Turner made three saves and played the full ninety minutes in net for the Spartans, while Angela Garriott made ten saves and played the full match for the Cascasdes...the Spartans outshot the Cascades 17 to 5 and held the edge in corners 11-1...
