Spartans Strike Early
TWU scores two first half goals to top SFU 2-0

BURNABY, British Columbia
– The Trinity Western University Spartans traveled to Burnaby Mountain Tuesday afternoon to play their annual friendly with the Simon Fraser University Clan. The Spartans scored two first half goals on their way to a solid 2-0 win. The win moves the Spartans to 6-5-4 while the loss drops the Clan to 7-8-0.

“We played very well and started strong and I was pleased with the way took care of finishing our chances,” said TWU Head Coach Graham Roxburgh. “We were able to play our younger players for much of the second half and they were outstanding.”

The Clan, who were playing without experienced defenders Danielle Sleiman (North Vancouver) and Alyssa Houghton (West Vancouver) in the lineup, gave up 11 shots on goal, making it a very long afternoon for freshman SFU goalkeeper Cassie Newbrook (New Westminster). At the other end of the pitch the Spartan defenders limited the Clans opportunities as SFU finished with four shots on goal.

Trinity Western converted first in the 25th minute, when Rachelle Lynch (Coquitlam) beat Newbrook to her right side after receiving a feed from Lindsay Rohla (Langley), who was streaking up the right wing. The Spartans then scored seven minutes later in the 32nd minute, when Stephanie Stewart (Langley) sent the ball to the front of the SFU net. TWU’s Dana DuMerton (Abbotsford) recovered a Clan defensive turnover in front of the SFU goal, and successfully converted her shot past Newbrook.

TWU out shot the Clan 22-to-7 and had a 6-to-1 edge in corner kicks. Allison Penner (Abbotsford) earned the victory in net for TWU, making one save before being replaced by Veronika Rogina (Surrey) in the 61st minute. Newbrook picked up the loss for the Clan, despite making nine saves.

Since joining Canada West in the fall of 2001 the Spartans are 3-1-2 in their annual friendly with the Clan. The Spartans have won the last three contests.

Next up for TWU is Canada West conference action in southern Alberta on October 21 and 22. The Spartans will play in Lethbridge on Saturday afternoon and in Calgary on Sunday afternoon. TWU returns home October 27 and 28 to finish off Canada West league play against the University of Saskatchewan and the University of Alberta.
