SPARTAN CLIP HORNS
LETHBRIDGE, Alberta - The Trinity Western Spartans dumped the host University of Lethbridge Pronghorns, 2-1 in Canada West Women’s soccer action. TWU is now two points away from clinching post season berth.
“It was a little tricky out there because of the wind and we struggled at times in the first half,” said TWU Head Coach Graham Roxburgh. “We were much better in the second half and we were able to create a number of quality chances. I was a very pleased with our second half effort.”
On a cold and windy afternoon, the Spartans rolled into Lethbridge and controlled the majority of the play, out shooting the Horns 21-7. Carlee O’Brien (Nanaimo, BC, 4th) opened the scoring 13 minutes into the half and put the visitors up 1-0. Kelli Sauers (Calgary, AB, 2nd) responded quickly for the Horns, in the 19th minute to tie the score at one. The wind was definitely a factor, with numerous Spartan shots sailing high and wide of the Horns goal. Horns keeper Megan Lumley (Lethbridge, AB, 3rd) was solid in the first half, making five saves.
With the Spartans playing into the wind in the second half, the Horns tried to push the ball over the top with little success. Christine Walker’s (White Rock, BC, 1st) header put the Spartans in the lead for good in the 60th minute. With under five minutes to play, the Horns were awarded a penalty after Vanessa Flak (Lethbridge, AB, 5th) was taken down in the box. TWU keeper Nikki Turner’s (Langley, BC, 1st) diving save off Flak’s shot from the spot saved the victory for the Spartans.
With the loss the Horns fall to 1-9-1, while the Spartans improve to 6-3-2 and gain ground on the U of C Dinos who fell to UCFV today in Calgary.
The Horns wrap up the home portion of their Canada West schedule with a game versus UCFV tomorrow, while the Spartans head to Calgary (6-2-3) in a battle for fourth place. A TWU win tomorrow or a Manitoba (4-6-1) loss clinches a playoff spot for the Spartans. Sixth place UCFV needs to win out and have TWU lose their last three matches for the 3-5-3 Cascades to catch the Spartans.
