FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

TWU FALL’S TO #4 ALBERTA
Two late goals by Amy Ciezki gives the Pandas a 4-2 win

LANGLEY, British Columbia
– The #4 ranked University of Alberta scored two goals in the final four minutes to earn a 4-2 victory over the Trinity Western University women’s soccer team Saturday night at TWU. Alberta’s Amy Ciezki (Sherwood Park, Alta.) scored in the 87th minute and in extra time to give the Pandas the win. The win improves the Pandas to 11-2-1, while the loss drops the Spartans to 8-4-2.

“I thought that we played well enough to win the match, we just failed to take advantage of the scoring opportunities that we created,” said TWU Head Coach Graham Roxburgh.

Alberta’s Claire Thomas (St. Albert, Alta.) opened the scoring in the 16th minute. The fifth year striker broke down the right side and sent a hard shot to the TWU net, which deflected past TWU keeper Veronika Rogina (Surrey, B.C.) and into the right side of the Spartans net.

Canada West goal scoring leader – 11 goals – Carlee O’Brien (Nanaimo, B.C.) tied the match in the 23rd minute. O’Brien was sent in alone on a beautiful long ball from TWU defender Whitney Agassiz (Salmon Arm, B.C.).

Natalie Swan (Ft. McMurray, Alta.) regained the lead for the Pandas in the 59th minute. Swan was able to get her foot on the ball in a goal mouth scramble after an Alberta corner kick.

After sustained pressure the Spartans Lindsay Rohla (Langley, B.C.) tied the match in the 80th minute. Rohla took a pass from Rebecca Ferguson (Calgary, Alta.), made a nice move to her right an slotted a beautiful shot past Alberta’s Caitlin Schmidt (Edmonton, Alta.) and into the back of the Pandas net.

Ciezki’s first goal came when she jumped on a rebound from a shot by Veronique Mayer-Paradis (Edmonton, Alta.) and placed it into the open net. Her second goal came off of a TWU defensive turn over, which left her alone in front of the Spartans net.

The Spartans will now head to Regina for the Canada West playoffs. TWU will open against the University of Calgary on Thursday, November 2 at 4 p.m. with the winner advancing to face the University of Victoria. TWU is 1-0-1 against Calgary this season. The Pandas are also heading to Regina, but they have a first round bye. In the second round they will face the winner of UBC and Regina.

Match Notes: Alberta had the edge in shots 19-10, shots on goal 8-5 and corner kicks 6-1... O’Brien’s 11 goals ties her personal best, which she set in 2004...it also puts her one goal off of the TWU single season scoring record of 12, which was set by former Spartan Ashlee Davison, also in 2004...O’Brien also finished in second spot in Canada West for points with 13, trailing Victoria’s Liz Hansen by one...
