TWU Spartans (2) vs the University of Victoria Vikes (0)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SPARTANS GOING TO CIS NATIONALS
TWU beats #1 Victoria to advance to Canada West Gold Medal Match and an automatic berth at Nationals

LANGLEY, British Columbia
– The Canada West leading goal scorer Carlee O’Brien (Nanaimo, B.C.) once again proved her worth to the Spartans as the fourth year forward scored twice to lift Trinity Western to a 2-0 win over the #1 ranked University of Victoria Saturday morning at the Canada West Championships in Regina, Sask.

“It’s a fantastic win for our team. We played with great heart and I’m extremely proud of them and the effort and discipline that they put forth,” said TWU Head Coach Graham Roxburgh. “Carlee’s finishes were outstanding today, her movement was excellent and her speed was always a constant threat.”

O’Brien’s first goal came in the 36th minute when she took a feed from Hilary Braacx (Burnaby, B.C.) and sent the ball home from the top of the box. Her second goal came in the 61st minute. O’Brien took advantage of a turnover in the center of the box. She controlled the ball and neatly placed it into the right side of the Victoria net.

O’Brien’s now has a personal best 13 goals on the season and with today’s performance she is now the leading goal scoring in TWU’s women’s soccer history. Her two goals give her 40 in her career, two more than former Spartan Ashlee Davison (’05). Her previous season’s best was 11 goals in 2004 when the Spartans won the CIS national championship.

TWU (#4 CW) will play the University of British Columbia (CW #3) tomorrow for the Canada West crown. UBC defeated the University of Alberta 2-0 in the other semi-final match.

Match Notes: TWU out-shot Victoria 12-9 and had the edge in corner kicks eight to six...TWU has played the Vikes in the Canada West semi-final each of the last three years. In 2004 the Spartans won 1-0 in penalty kicks on their way to their CIS title and last season the Vikes won 2-1 in penalty’s on the way to their CIS title...despite losing today the Vikes season continues at the national championships as the host school...
