SPARTANS DEFEAT THUNDERBIRDS 2-1
TWU shows young players can contend with National Champs

LANGLEY, British Columbia – The Trinity Western women’s soccer team (2006-07 Canada West Champions) topped the CIS Champions, the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds, 2-1 on a favorable spring afternoon in Langley B.C. Saturday.

The match was a chance for each team to showcase their young talent, as both started many of their bench players from this past year’s Canada West season.  Neither team could gain control of the play in the opening minutes, but the scattered play held decent scoring chances for both teams.

Carlee O’Brien (4th year, Nanaimo, B.C.), Canada West’s leading scorer from the 2006-07 conference play, had a good look at the net when she controlled and turned on a ball in front of UBC’s net.

Just 32 minutes into the game TWU lost goalkeeper Veronika Rogina (1st, Surrey, B.C.) when she collided with a UBC forward to stop an attack.  She left the game and would not return.  

The first goal came for the Spartans in the 43rd minute when Rachelle Lynch (1st, Coquitlam, B.C.) lofted a volley over Jaclyn Dunnett (Burnaby, B.C.), the Thunderbird keeper.  Kelli Ann McCabe (1st, Tsawwassen, B.C.) was credited with the assist.

The 57th minute presented another great chance for the Spartans when Hilary Braacx (2nd year, Burnaby, B.C.) redirected a ball sent from Rebecca Furgason (1st, Calgary, A.B.) in front of Dunnett.

O’Brien scored the Spartans’ second goal on a break away, assisted nicely Chantal Esperanza (1st, Surrey, B.C.) and McCabe with her second of the game.

The Thunderbirds maintained possession in Spartan territory for much of the second, but did not score in time to put pressure on the home team.  Caitlin Davie (Tsawwassen, B.C.) scored UBC’s goal on a penalty kick in injury time placing the ball in the top right corner.
