SPARTANS FALL IN SPRING CUP FINAL
-Victoria Edges Out TWU 2-1 in overtime

VICTORIA
– The Trinity Western University women’s soccer team matched the University of Victoria through regulation at Sunday’s Spring Cup final in Victoria. But the home team had the edge in the extra frame as the Vikes defeated the Spartans 2-1 to take the final at UVIC’s Centennial Stadium.

TWU’s Dana DuMerton opened up the scoring in the 16th minute, when she slipped her shot past the Victoria’s Kasia Gwiazda to put the Spartans up 1-0. An own goal gave the Vikes the equalizer with 17 minutes remaining in the first half. Neither team was able to find another goal in the first half as the teams remained tied at 1-1 at the break.

Both squads played solid defense for the entire second frame as neither team was able to find the go ahead goal through 90 minutes.

Six minutes into the overtime Mariel Solsberg found the back of the net after she was able to take of advantage of a loose ball in the Spartan penalty area. The goal would prove to be the game winner as the Vikes remained ahead 2-1 after the 15 minute overtime frame.

The Spartans got to Sunday’s final with an impressive defensive stance in their 2-1 win over the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds. TWU got off to a slow start against the Thunderbirds, taking until the 43rd minute before Dana DuMerton scored the opening goal.

Leading 1-0 at the break, the Spartans then opened up their lead in the second to 2-0 when Melanie Ingwersen sent her shot sailing past the UBC keeper 68th minute. Stephanie Thibert responded for the Thunderbirds, scoring her team’s only goal 79th minute. TWU’s Rachelle Lynch sealed the 3-1 win with her goal in the 80th minute.

Next up for the Spartans is at Western Washington University on Saturday, April 7. Match time in Bellingham, Wash. is set for 2 p.m.
