O’BRIEN LEADS WITH HAT-TRICK
LANGLEY, British Columbia – Fourth year forward Carlee O’Brien (Nanaimo, B.C.) scored three times, including the game winner in the final seconds, to lead the Trinity Western University women’s soccer team to a solid 4-3 win over the Seattle University Falcons Friday afternoon in Seattle, Wash.
“We played well even though we were missing a few key players and Carlee’s finishing was brilliant today,” said TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. “I was very encouraged with the way that our young players played today. Kristina Walker was outstanding, while Chantal Esperanza (Surrey, B.C.) and Dana DuMerton (Abbotsford, B.C.) had a great work rate in the midfield.”
O’Brien scored in the 20th minute, 25th minute and in the 90th minute for her three goals. TWU’s Dana DuMerton scored the other TWU goal midway through the second half on a penalty kick (PK) after Melanie Ingwersen (Abbotsford, B.C.) was fouled in the penalty area.
Seattle opened the scoring in the 10th minute. After O’Brien’s first two goals, TWU led 2-1 at half. DuMerton’s PK gave TWU a 3-1 lead. The Falcons scored twice, including one on a PK, late in the second half to tie the match at 3-3 to set up O’Brien’s game winner.
Next up for the Spartans is Seattle Pacific University for their final match of the season on Saturday, April 14. Match time at SPU in Seattle is set for 12 p.m.
