TRINITY WESTERN TIES MIAMI UNIVERSITY
-Spartans show well in competitive match.
OXFORD, Ohio – The Trinity Western University women’s soccer team used a goal by Dana DuMerton (Abbotsford, B.C.) to earn a 1-1 tie with the Miami University Red Hawks Wednesday afternoon in Oxford, Ohio.
“It was a good contested battle. This team is better then Wright State and we played much better against them,” said TWU Head Coach Graham Roxburgh. “We continue to be plagued by injuries, so I’m very pleased with the way our rookies hung in against a very organized and a very athletic team.”
DuMerton opened the scoring in the 25th minute. The third year forward took a ball about 30 yards out, went to her left, took a touch and from 20 yards out hammered a left footed shot into the back to the net.
The Red Hawks were able to tie the match ten minutes later after a collective breakdown of the Spartans back eight allowed Miami to tie the match at 1-1.
The Spartans had a few quality chances late in the match, but were unable to get the go ahead marker.
TWU keeper Leah Schmelter (first year, Langley, B.C.) was forced to leave the match late in the first half after sustaining an injury to her shoulder. With injuries to the other Spartan keepers, rookie defender Lauren Chartrand (Powell River, B.C.) was forced to play the second half for TWU.
Miami University is an NCAA Division I school that competes in the Mid-American Conference.
Next up for the Spartans is at the University of Cincinnati. Match time in Cincinnati on Thursday, August 23 is set for 7 p.m.
