SPARTANS HEADED TO POST SEASON WITH SOLID WIN
-O'Brien, Rohla, Higgins, Heinrich and Agassiz say good-bye

LANGLEY, British Columbia - In her final game at Trinity Western University Carlee O'Brien (5th year, forward, Nanaimo, B.C.) had a goal and an assist to lead the Trinity Western University women's soccer team to an impressive 3-0 win over the visiting University College of the Fraser Valley Cascades, Saturday evening at TWU's Langley, B.C. campus.

"We had a nice corporate effort and it's nice to get back on the winning track and to be back in the right frame of mind as we prepare for the last part of the season and now the post season," said TWU Head Coach Graham Roxburgh. "I thought our back line had an outstanding night as they limited Fraser Valley's chances. I was also pleased with the way Andre McLachlan (2nd year, Maple Ridge, B.C.) came on strong and gave us some really solid flank play on the right side in the second half."

Melissa Mobilio (1st year, Coquitlam, B.C.) opened the scoring in the 13th minute with her second goal of the season. The rookie midfielder took a pass from midfielder Christine Walker ((2nd year, White Rock, B.C.), to get open down the left side of the park. Then from just inside the side line she sent a beautiful shot over UCFV keeper Angela Garriott (Campbell River, B.C.) and into the top of the Cascades net. "Melissa was dangerous from the opening whistle and just provided a consistent threat for us down the flanks," said Roxburgh. "Her service was very good tonight and we were unfortunate not get on the end of a few more."

O'Brien made it 2-0 for the home team in the 42nd minute. The speedy forward took a through ball from Walker and broke in alone on Garriott. Then from just inside the penalty area O'Brien scored her sixth goal of the season by hammering the ball past Garriott and into the back of the UCFV net. "Carlee's finish was outstanding," said Roxburgh. "I was really pleased for her, because she has been feeling a little bit of pressure, so for her to finish so nicely was great."

Up 2-0 at the break the Spartans came out very strong to start the second half. TWU forward Dana DuMerton (3rd year, Abbotsford, B.C.) sealed the win in the 46th minute when she took a header from O'Brien, made a quick turn, crossed the mouth of the goal and slotted the ball into the net from just outside the UCFV crease. DuMerton's fifth goal of the season gave TWU a comfortable 3-0 lead. "Dana held the ball up extremely well tonight and was able to provide a solid target for us and her finish on her goal was excellent," added Roxburgh.

The win clinches a post season spot for the Spartans. TWU keeper Veronika Rogina made three saves to record her fifth shut-out of the season. UCFV's Garriott made 10 saves in the loss.

Next up for the Spartans are their final two matches of Canada West Conference play. TWU will travel to Alberta to face the University of Calgary on Saturday, October 27 and the University of Lethbridge on Sunday, October 28.

Match Notes: The Spartans held a special ceremony after the match to honour fifth year's Carlee O'Brien, Lindsay Rohla (Langley, B.C.), Erin-Marie Higgins (Surrey, B.C.), Brittany Heinrich (Kelowna, B.C.) and Whitney Agassiz (Salmon Arm, B.C.) who were playing their final game at TWU....The five starters are the remaining players from TWU 2004 national championship team... "Obviously a bitter-sweet night for me personally, to have such special kids and important fifth years in our program that we said good-bye tonight from a home game standpoint was very difficult," said an emotional Roxburgh. "But with some luck and with some hard work and the focus being back on track who knows maybe we extend their careers for a few more weeks."
