TWU Spartans (4) at the University of Calgary Dinos (2)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ROHLA, SPARTANS ELIMINATE DINOS
CALGARY - Lindsay Rohla (5th year, Langley, B.C.) scored twice as the tenth-ranked Trinity Western University Spartans overcame a 13-8 shot deficit to defeat the Calgary Dinos 4-2 Saturday afternoon on a windy West Varsity Soccer Pitch.
With the victory, Trinity Western (8-3-2) officially eliminated Calgary (4-7-2) from post-season competition.
In a game where Calgary held the edge in territorial play throughout, the Dinos were unable to capitalize on their chances while the Spartans made the most of their offensive opportunities.
"We got a couple of opportunities, and a couple of good goals in the first half," said Dinos assistant coach Samantha Simpson. "We're young and we need to be able to capitalize on those opportunities we create. It just wasn't happening today."
Calgary opened up a short-lived lead in the 16th minute when Lindsay Burrowes beat Spartan ‘keeper Veronika Rogina (2nd year, Surrey, B.C.) with a free kick from just outside the box that found the net inside the far post. On the ensuing kickoff, TWU's Rebecca Ferguson (2nd year, Calgary) brought the ball up the field and fed it to Carlee O'Brien (5th year, Nanaimo, B.C.), who beat Alana Knowles high on the short side to tie it at 1-1 - the first of three goals in 14 minutes for the Spartans.
Rohla tallied her first in the 24th minute, beating Knowles between the legs from point blank range off a nice cross from Andrea McLachlan (3rd year, Maple Ridge, B.C.) to put the Spartans up for good. Seven minutes later she scored the eventual game-winner when O'Brien stepped around a Calgary defender and centered the ball. Rohla beat Knowles to the loose ball, putting the Spartans up 3-1.
Only four minutes after that, Calgary responded when Jessica Bush scored her first of the season, an unassisted tally that capped off five goals in 18 minutes between the two teams.
Play settled down after the five-goal outburst as the Dinos pressed for the equalizer. Late in the half, Rohla almost earned a hat-trick when her hard shot from outside the box beat Knowles but not the crossbar, and Danielle Gerig (1st year, Langley, B.C.)sent the rebound over the net.
Calgary outplayed the Spartans through much of the second half as the TWU offence operated in fits and starts. The Dinos drew nine free kicks and three corners in the second half. Through it all Calgary could only muster one shot on goal in the frame, a Burrowes free kick from just outside the area that Rogina handled easily.
Ferguson sealed the win for the Spartans in the 77th minute, when her unassisted shot from outside the area sailed over Knowles to open up a two-goal cushion for the visitors.
Both teams play their final matches of the season Sunday, when Trinity Western heads south to Lethbridge while the Dinos host the Fraser Valley Cascades.
