SPARTANS OPEN 2008 PRESEASON WITH DRAW AGAINST VIKINGS

LANGLEY, British Columbia - Two rookies and a veteran led the Trinity Western University women's soccer team to a 3-3 draw with the Western Washington University Vikings in a friendly Friday evening at TWU's Langley, B.C. campus.

The Spartans fell behind early as the Vikings went up 2-0 in the first 14 minutes on goals by Lucy Miller (Palisades, Calif.) - 8th minute and Claire Morgan (Bellingham, Wash.) -14th minute. However, TWU settled down and started to create quality chances as the half progressed.

TWU forward Dana DuMerton (4th year, Abbotsford, B.C.) made it a one goal game with the Spartans first goal of the season in the 17th minute. DuMerton took a pass from rookie midfielder Tessa Meyer (Surrey, B.C.) and looped it over the top of the Vikings keeper from the right side of penalty area.

Trailing 2-1 at the half the Spartans came out strong to start the second half. Coach Roxburgh's top recruits showed well in the final 45 minutes. Rookie forward Nikki Wright (Cloverdale, B.C.) tied the match at 2-2 on her first goal as a Spartan four minutes into the second half. Wright used her speed and strength to break past the Vikings defenders to go in alone on the WWU net, where she sent the ball across the crease and into the lower right corner of the Vikings net.

Eleven minutes later fellow first year Samantha Slack (midfield, Surrey, B.C.) slotted a perfect cross from Wright, who was going in alone on the Vikings net, to give the Spartans a 3-2 lead with 30 minutes remaining.

TWU looked sharp for much of the game. They outshot WWU 15-7 and forced the Vikings to make six saves. The Spartans almost had the win to open the preseason, but defensive miscue allowed Morgan to get her second goal of the match when she chipped a ball into the top of the net from about 30 yards out.

The Spartans Veronika Rogina (3rd year, Langley, B.C.) played the first half in net for TWU, with rookie Kristen Funk (Calgary) playing the second 45 minutes. The Vikings started Kylie Broadbent (Spokane, Wash.), who played 64 minutes, and finished with Jamie Arthurs (Richland, Wash.) for the final 26 minutes.

Next up for the Spartans is three game swing through the Pacific Northwest USA. TWU will play at Oregon State on August 18, at Pacific Lutheran on Aug 20 and at Seattle Pacific on Aug 21.

TWU and the Spartan women's soccer team are proud hosts of the 2008 CIS Women's Soccer Championships to be held November 6-9 at Trinity Western University's Langley, B.C. campus.
