TWU Spartans (0) at the Oregon State University Beavers (2)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SPARTANS FALL TO NCAA DIV I BEAVERS
-Strong first half lifts Oregon State over TWU
CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Trinity Western University women's soccer team traveled south Monday evening to continue their preseason with a match against NCAA Div. I Oregon State. The Spartans (0-1-1) had a slow start, but rebounded in the second half before falling 2-0 to the Beavers in Corvallis, Ore.
"We struggled with the pace in the first half, but we had a good talk at the half and we had a much better competitive spirit in the second half," commented TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. "We battled and it was good experience for our young team to play against a decent team."
Trinity Western was out-shot 14-1 in the first half and as a result found themselves down 2-0 after 45 minutes. Despite the onslaught of shots from Oregon, TWU rookie keeper Kristen Funk (Calgary) was able to keep the home team off of the scoreboard until the 35th minute. That is when Oregon's Melissa Peck (Boise, Idaho) took a thru ball and went in alone on Funk. The TWU keeper had no chance as Peck found the back of the net to give the Beavers the 1-0 lead.
Five minutes (39th) later OSU took advantage of a TWU defensive breakdown to extend the lead to 2-0. Beavers midfielder Najma Homidi (Fremont, Calif.) scored when she used a diving header to redirect a Brittney Sheffield pass into the back of the TWU net.
The second half saw the Spartans defense settle down as they limited the Beavers to just four shots.
Funk made five saves and played the entire match for Trinity Western, while Katie Bell (Denver) played the first half with teammate Colleen Boyd (La Canada, Calif.) playing the second half for Oregon State.
Next up for the Spartans is a scrimmage against the Corban College Warriors on Tuesday afternoon. Game time in Salem, Ore. is set for 2 p.m. They will follow that with a game against Pacific Lutheran on Aug. 20. Game time in Seattle is set for 7p.m.
Game Notes: OSU outshot TWU 18-2 and had the edge in corner kicks 9-1...the Spartans Melissa Mobilio (2nd year, midfield, Coquitlam, B.C.) recorded TWU's only shot on goal in the 65th minute...Funk made four saves in the first 30 minutes...
