SPARTANS - CASCADES DRAW

ABBOTSFORD, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University women's soccer team came away with a 0-0 draw against the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades Saturday afternoon at Abbotsford's Bateman Park. It was a disappointing tie for the visitors as they looked to earn the full three points in their opening match of Canada West conference play.

"We made some poor decisions in the attacking third and I didn't feel we did enough to break down their defense in order to get the win," commented a disappointed TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. "We had some dangerous opportunities in the box, but we didn't have any finishing touch. And until we develop that skill we are going to have frustrating afternoons like today."

The Spartans carried much of the play throughout the match and dominated the second half out shooting the Cascades 7-3 in the final 45 minutes. But it was not enough as the hometown Cascades hung on for the draw.

The Spartans were nearly down 1-0 at the half, but TWU keeper Kristen Funk (Delta, B.C.) made a spectacular diving save on UFV's Kristen Vanderpauw (Maple Ridge, B.C.) in the final seconds of the opening frame. "Kristen looked very comfortable out there today and she made a great save in the first half," said Roxburgh.

TWU came out hard in the second half. They had quality chances from Samantha Slack (1st year, midfielder, Surrey, B.C.), Nikki Wright (1st year, forward, Cloverdale, B.C.), Dana DuMerton (4th year, forward, Abbotsford, B.C.) and Alexi Foster (1st year, forward, Fort Langley, B.C.) - all of whom were thwarted by UFV keeper Chantelle Biagioni (Pitt Meadows, B.C.). The Spartans kept up the pressure for the full 45 minutes but to no avail. "Fraser Valley was very organized today and they worked very hard and made it difficult for us. We just didn't do enough today to get the win," added Roxburgh.

First year keeper Biagioni played all 90 minutes for UFV, making seven saves, while TWU rookie goalie Kristen Funk made three saves for the Spartans.

TWU out shot UFV on the day with nine shots, seven shots of which were on goal, while UFV tallied five shots, including three on net.

The Cascades (0-1-0) and Spartans (0-1-0) both host UBC and Victoria next weekend. TWU suits up against the Thunderbirds on Thursday, Sept. 11. Match time at TWU is set for 4 p.m.
