SPARTANS TOP CLAN
-TWU's Roxburgh gets 99th career win over SFU

LANGLEY, British Columbia - Trinity Western University forward scored the lone goal as the Spartans defeated the No. 8 ranked (NAIA) Simon Fraser University Clan Tuesday night at TWU's Langley, B.C. campus. The win moves the Spartans to 3-1-3 on the season and gives TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh his 99th career victory. The loss drops the Clan to 6-2-0.

The Spartans started the match well and were able to maintain their intensity and pressure through out the first 45 minutes. TWU controlled the possession and dominated the scoring opportunities in the first half out shooting the SFU 10-0.

Simon Fraser keeper Cassie Newbrook (New Westminster, B.C.) kept the Clan in the game as she made five saves on the six Trinity Western shots that were on net in the first 45 minutes. The lone shot to get by her came in the 13th minute form the Spartans Daniela Gerig (2nd year, forward, Walnut Grove, B.C.). Gerig took a pass through the midfield from forward Dana DuMerton (4th year, Abbotsford, B.C.) then gathered possession turned and split the SFU defenders to find open space in the centre of the Clan's penalty area. From there Gerig sent a shot hard and low past SFU's Newbrook and into the lower right corner of the Clan net.

Despite quality chances for the home team they only went into the break up 1-0

The second half started well for the Clan as they immediately tested TWU keeper Veronika Rogina (3rd year, Langley, B.C.), who had subbed in at the half for Kristen Funk (1st year, Calgary). Three minutes into the half SFU's Jessica Fleming (Coquitlam, B.C.) sent a low hard shot to towards the right side of the TWU net, but Rogina was able to make a diving save to preserve the 1-0 lead.

In the sixtieth minute Gerig nearly got her second of the night, but Newbrook made a diving save to her left to keep the deficit at one goal.

The second half was played more in the central part of the park as each team managed only three shots towards the opponents net.

TWU's Kristen Funk and Veronika Rogina split the goal keeping duties in the Spartans win with Rogina making one save, while Newbrook made seven saves and played the full ninety in the loss.

Next up for the Spartans is a return to Canada West conference action when the will take on the University of the Fraser Valley. Match time at TWU on Saturday, September 20 is set for 5 p.m.

Match Notes: With the win TWU's head coaches career record sits at 99 wins, 69 losses and 36 ties. His record since TWU's women's soccer entered the CIS in 2002 is 88 wins, 52 losses and 33 ties...TWU out shot SFU 13-3 and 8-1 in shots on goal...the Spartans had eight corner kicks while the Clan had one...the contest was a non-conference match for TWU, while it is an official counter on SFU's record NAIA record...TWU had 24 players enter the match, while SFU had 16...
