TWU Spartans (3) vs. the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades (1)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
TWU COACH ROXBURGH GETS 100TH CAREER WIN
-Spartans bookend coaches record with win over Fraser Valley
LANGLEY, British Columbia - Trinity Western University women's soccer head coach Graham Roxburgh got his 100th career victory as coach of the Spartans when his team defeated the University of the Fraser Valley 3-1 Saturday night at TWU's Langley, B.C. campus. The win keeps the Spartans undefeated at 2-0-2, while the loss keeps the Cascades winless at 0-3-1.
"It is a nice milestone to achieve at a special place with a special group of players," said Roxburgh. "I'm very blessed to be able to win 100 games here at Trinity Western and the applause and the appreciation that my players gave me after the match made me feel extremely special."
The Spartans dominated the first 45 minutes of play. TWU was dangerous with most of their possession as they out-shot UFV 16-9. If not for the fine play of Cascade keeper Chantelle Biagioni (Pitt Meadows, B.C.) the visitors could have been down by more than 2-1 at the break.
TWU's Dana DuMerton (Abbotsford, B.C.) opened the scoring in the 7th minute. The 4th year forward took a pass from Becca Ferguson (3rd year, f/m, Calgary), split the Cascade defenders and sent a high arching shot over Biagioni and into the top left corner of the UFV net. "Dana DuMerton had an outstanding performance, a Captain's performance tonight; [her goal] was a very special goal from a very special player and it directly influenced the outcome of the game for us," said Roxburgh." I thought that Becca gave us some very good minutes in the midst of being sick throughout the week."
The Cascades finally got their first goal of the season after 314 minutes of Canada West competition. UFV's Kristen Vanderpauw (Maple Ridge, B.C.) got the tying goal in the 44th minute. Teammate Kristina Habbas (Abbotsford, B.C.) set the goal up beautifully. Habbas took a ball in the centre of the park went out the left side and sent a pass across the top of the six yard box. Vanderpauw was at the receiving end as she redirected the ball into the lower right corner of the TWU net.
The Spartans quickly responded and less than a minute into extra time Daniela Gerig (2nd year, forward, Fort Langley, B.C.) had regained the one goal margin for the Langley squad. Gerig was sent in alone after two fine passes from DuMerton and Nikki Wright (1st year, forward, Cloverdale, B.C.). Gerig, in one-V-one on Biagioni, neatly sent the ball into the lower left corner of the net to give TWU a 2-1 lead at the half.
The Spartans continued to control the play through the second half as they finished the match with a 25-6 edge in total shots and a 13-3 edge in shots on goal.
Trinity Western got the insurance goal in the 56th minute off the toe of CIS Athlete of the Week Nikki Wright. The rookie forward scored her fourth goal in four games when she took a pass from DuMerton and went in alone on the Cascade net. She side stepped UFV's Biagioni and walked in on the empty net to give TWU the 3-1 lead. "Nikki is such a threat out there. Her dangerous pace and ability to create up front was a constant for us tonight," commented Roxburgh.
TWU's Kristen Funk (1st year, Calgary) played the full match and made two saves to earn the win, while Biagioni played the full 90 and made 10 saves in the loss.
"I was delighted that we won, thought we could have put the game away earlier, but Fraser Valley played very hard and any time you can beat a team in Canada West it is a good win," added Roxburgh.
Players of the Match were TWU's DuMerton, who had a goal and two assists and UFV's Vanderpauw.
Next up for the Spartans are the University of Regina on Friday, September 26 and the University of Manitoba on Saturday, September 27. Match time at TWU on both nights is set for 5 p.m.
Match notes: Roxburgh has a career record of 100-69-36 and a CIS record of 89-52-33...His first ever win at TWI came on Sept. 11, 1999 when TWU defeated Fraser Valley 2-1...his first Canada West conference win came in his first game in Canada West on Sept. 13, 2001when TWU defeated UBC 3-1 ...
