TWU Spartans (3) vs. the University of Manitoba Bisons (0)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SPARTANS STAND ALONE
-TWU tops visiting Manitoba Bisons
LANGLEY, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University women's soccer team remained the lone unbeaten team in Canada West with a solid 3-0 win over the No. 3 ranked University of Manitoba Bisons Saturday night at TWU's Langley, B.C. campus. The win moves TWU into second place at 4-0-2, while the first place Bisons, with two games in hand, drop to 6-2-0.
"I was very pleased with the way we played as a group. Manitoba is a very dangerous team and have forward who can be very lethal," said TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. "And anytime you can score three times against one of the best team in Canada is a good performance."
TWU had the edge in play in the first half out shooting Manitoba 6-2, while the Bisons, who were playing from behind, had a 4-2 edge in the second half.
Rookie forward Nikki Wright (Cloverdale, B.C.) opened the scoring with a beautiful header in the 38th minute, with assists to Becca Ferguson (3rd year, Calgary) and Melissa Mobilio (2nd year, Coquitlam, B.C.). Mobilio took the ball up the left side of the field and sent a cross to the far post where Ferguson was waiting. Ferguson volleyed the ball back to a charging Wright. Wright went high into the air and headed the ball past Manitoba's Ashley Forbes (Winnipeg) and into the top left side of the Bisons net.
Five minutes later, 43rd, the Spartans got their second of the match. Dana DuMerton (4th year, Abbotsford, B.C.) started the play when she beat the Bisons midfield up the right side. Gerig then centered the ball over to Nikki Wright, who drew the defender and continued the ball to the left side to Mobilio. Mobilio controlled the pass and then slotted the ball into the open left side of the Manitoba net to put Trinity Western up 2-0 at the break.
Daniela Gerig got the Spartans an insurance goal with her sixth goal of the weekend in the 72nd minute. Nikki Wright sent Gerig up the right side, where she went past the outside defender to go in on the Bisons net. Gerig then hammered a ball just inside the far post to give TWU a 3-0 lead. "Daniela's had a fantastic finish and her work rate was very impressive tonight," said Roxburgh. "She came in off the bench and gave us energy and never stopped working the entire match."
The Bisons worked hard to get back in the match. Desiree Scott (Winnipeg) had some dangerous chances against the Spartans late in the half, but TWU keeper Kristen Funk (1st year, Calgary) made some quality stops to help the Spartans preserve the victory.
Funk made four saves to earn the win for the Spartans, while Forbes took the loss for the Bisons.
Bison Player of the Match Scott led Manitoba with two shots on goal, while TWU Player of the Match Nikki Wright led TWU with three shots, a goal and two assists.
Next up for the Spartans is road trip to Alberta on Oct. 4-5 when they will match up with the University of Calgary and the University of Lethbridge.
Match Notes: Earlier in the day UBC lost their unbeaten status with a 2-0 loss in Saskatoon to Saskatchewan to drop to 4-1-2, while Manitoba lost its unbeaten status on Friday afternoon with a 3-2 loss to Fraser Valley...the Spartans and the Bisons will have a return match in Winnipeg on Oct. 25...
