TWU Spartans (1) at the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns (1)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SPARTANS AND PRONGHORNS DRAW
-TWU still undefeated
LETHBRIDGE, Alberta - Trinity Western University rookie forward Nikki Wright (Cloverdale, B.C.) added to her Canada West goal scoring lead with the Spartans lone goal in a 1-1 tie with the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns Sunday afternoon in Lethbridge, Alta. The tie keeps the Spartans as the lone undefeated team in Canada West at 5-0-3, while the Pronghorns move to 2-5-3.
A stiff and gusting wind played havoc for both teams throughout the game. The Spartans had the best chance of the half, with forward Daniele Gerig (2nd year, Fort Langley, B.C.) sending teammate Wright in on a break, only to be turned away by a sliding save from Pronghorn keeper Megan Lumley (5th year, Lethbridge, Alta.).
Ten minutes into the second half the Spartans finally hit the scoreboard. Spartans keeper Kristen Funk's (1st year, Calgary) long distance boot found the on running Wright, who broke in alone and chipped it over a challenging Lumley for her ninth goal in eight Canada West competitions.
For the second straight match, the Lethbridge Pronghorns needed a late second half goal to earn a draw. After falling behind 1-0, the Horns got a goal off a corner kick in the 77th minute to secure the tie with the Spartans.
Kelli Sauers (4th year, Calgary) low driving corner kick into the box was not cleared by a closing Spartan defender. Funk was unable to corral the loose ball, allowing Pronghorn Kristen Dow (5th year, Calgary) to deposit it into the Spartans net from three feet out.
Funk made two saves for the Spartans, while Lumley made four for the Pronghorns.
The Spartans are on the road again next weekend, traveling to Victoria and UBC. The Horns are now off until after the Thanksgiving weekend and return to action October 18th and 19th for their final home games of the season hosting the Regina Cougars and Manitoba Bisons respectively.
Match Notes: Lethbridge outshot TWU 13 to 12...with both teams each having four corner kicks...Wright also leads Canada West in points with 14, points per game with 1.75 and goals per game at 1.12...
