TWU Spartans (1) at the University of Victoria Vikes (2)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SPARTANS FALL FOR FIRST TIME
VICTORIA - The Trinity Western University women's soccer team fell 2-1 to the University of Victoria Saturday afternoon in Victoria. The loss is the first of the season for TWU and moves the No. 7 ranked Spartans to 5-1-3, while the win moves the No. 3 ranked Vikes to 8-2-1.
"We paid the price for coming out flat and giving up two corporate goals," commented TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. "And even though we scored early in the second half and were for the most part the better team in the second half we have to learn that against a very good team you cannot start that slowly."
The Vikes came out strong and quickly and put the Spartans under pressure. Their efforts were rewarded as Victoria's Janelle Smith found the back of the TWU net in the 4th minute of play.
Trinity Western gathered themselves after the goal and made some strong runs into the Victoria end of the park. Spartans midfielder Chantelle Whitehead (1st year, Surrey, B.C.) nearly tied the match in the 12th minute, but her shot just missed the mark as it went off of the Vikes crossbar.
Victoria got what would prove to be the game winner 10 minutes later. The Vikes Kendra flock converted a pass from Janelle Smith to put the home team up 2-0 in the 22nd minute.
The Spartans had a much better start to the second half. TWU forward Daniela Gerig (2nd year, Fort Langley, B.C.) got the Spartans within one when she converted a Nikki Wright (1st year, forward, Cloverdale, B.C.) pass to bring Trinity Western to within one goal, trailing 2-1.
The visitors from Langley, B.C. continued to press for the tying goal for much of the second half. But despite out-shooting the home team 13-7 in the second half they were unable to get the equalizer. The Spartans best chance came off of the foot of Gerig. The lanky forward almost got her second of the game in the 87th minute, but her shot just sailed over the crossbar and out of play. "We generated chances in the second half, but nothing was very purposeful and cutting edge and in the end we ran out of time," said Roxburgh.
TWU keeper Kristen Funk (1st year, Calgary) made six saves in the loss, while Victoria's Stephanie Parker made 12 saves to record the win.
"I'm disappointed to lose and disappointed in the manner in which we started, but we can take something away in that we pushed a very good UVIC team hard in the second half," added Roxburgh.
Next up for the Spartans is the No. 9 ranked University of British Columbia (6-1-4) tomorrow afternoon. Match time at Point Grey is set for 12 p.m. The Vikes will also be in action as they will remain home to host the University of the Fraser Valley (2-5-2) tomorrow afternoon.
Match Notes: Gerig's goal gives her eight on the season and puts her one goal behind league leading Wright...Wright's assist keeps her in first place in Canada West with 15 points on nine goals and six assists...Smith's goal and assist give her 11 points on the season on four goals and seven assists to trail only Wright for the league lead...earlier this season the Spartans defeated the Vikes 2-1 at TWU's field in Langley...
