TWU Spartans (3) vs. the University of Saskatchewan Huskies (0)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CANADA WEST GOAL SCORING LEADERS LEAD SPARTANS TO WIN
CHILLIWACK, British Columbia - Trinity Western University forwards: rookie Nikki Wright (Cloverdale, B.C.) and second year Daniela Gerig (Fort Langley, B.C.), the top two goal scorers in Canada West, added to their totals in Friday night's 3-0 victory over the University of Saskatchewan. Wright scored twice to move her Canada West best to 11 goals, while Gerig added one to her second best nine goals in a match played in a constant downpour at Chilliwack, B.C.'s Exhibition Park
The win moves the No. 10 ranked Spartans to 6-2-3, while the loss drops the Huskies to 3-7-1.
"On a wet night with a slick field and a tricky opponent, I thought that we handled ourselves very well and it's nice to get back to our winning ways," said TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. "It was good to get the lead as Saskatchewan has proved to be a dangerous opponent as they have beaten some good teams in our league, so we weren't taking anything for granted tonight. So I'm really pleased with getting the three points and how well we played."
The rookie scoring sensation got her first goal of the match in the 33rd minute off of a set piece. TWU midfielder Tessa Meyer (1st year, Surrey, B.C.) took the free kick from just to the right side of the Saskatchewan penalty area. Meyer hit a beautiful cross to the near post, where Wright dove and headed it past Saskatchewan's Kailee Marland (Saskatoon) and into the right side of the Huskies net. "Tessa had a great ball into Nikki and Nikki's finish was fantastic," said Roxburgh.
Second year forward Daniela Gerig got her lone goal of the game off of a quick free kick deep in the Huskies end of the park. TWU midfielder Nikki Byrne (Langley, B.C.) put the ball in play while Saskatchewan was getting organized. Byrne found Gerig just outside the Huskies six yard box. Gerig turned and hit the ball into the right side of the net to give TWU a 2-0 lead in the 52nd minute. "Daniela gave us great minutes and tireless work and fantastic finish to allow us to go up two goals on a very alert heads up play from Nikki Byrne," said Roxburgh.
Wright put the game away the 63rd minute. She took a pass from midfielder Dana DuMerton (4th year, Abbotsford, B.C.) and went in on the Huskies net. Wright got between two defenders and neatly looped the ball over Saskatchewan's Marland and into the top of the Huskies net. "Dana had an outstanding first half and really gave us a Captain's performance," said Roxburgh. "She was all over the park and really generated some good chances by her work rate and her ability to create out of possession."
TWU keeper Veronika Rogina (3rd year, Langley, B.C.) made two saves to record the shut-out win, while Marland made two saves in the loss.
Next up for the Spartans is the University of Alberta Pandas tomorrow evening. Match time at TWU is tentatively scheduled for 4 p.m. The Huskies will suit up again tomorrow afternoon against the University of the Fraser Valley at Abbotsford's Bateman Park.
Match Notes: TWU had a total of 12 shots, while Saskatchewan had a total of two...the Spartans finished with five corner kicks to the Huskies one...TWU is host of the 2008 CIS Women's Soccer Championships and because of the heavy rains chose to play in Chilliwack in order to protect their fields for the championship...
