SPARTANS ENTER POST SEASON ON FOUR GAME WIN STREAK

REGINA - Midfielder Chantelle Whitehead's (1st year, Surrey, B.C.) goal in the 11th minute stood up as the winner as the Trinity Western University Spartans earned a 1-0 win over the University of Regina Cougars on Sunday afternoon in Canada West women's soccer action at the U of R Field in Regina.

"I was really impressed with our whole team. We had a great cooperate effort in a game that could have been tricky, especially against a Regina team that can be very difficult to play at home," said TWU head Coach Graham Roxburgh.

Whitehead's goal came on a free kick from about 22 yards out. She fired a rocket that hit just inside the left post, and Cougars goaltender Michelle Anderson had no chance of stopping it. "Chantelle pinged a fantastic free kick right into the window," commented Roxburgh.

Keeper Veronika Rogina (3rd year, Surrey, B.C.) made seven saves for the Spartans to record the shutout victory. Anderson made eight saves for Regina. "Regina pushed us all the way and there keeper made some fantastic saves including robbing Nikki [Wright] (1st year, Cloverdale, B.C.) twice," said Roxburgh.

Wright led the Spartans with five shots on the Regina net, three of which were saved by Anderson, while Tarina Mayer fired five shots at Trinity Western's net, four of which were saved by Rogina.

The match was played in near-freezing temperatures, with the familiar northwesterly wind howling at over 50 km/h.

The win gives the Spartans a 9-2-3 record for the season and a second-place finish in the conference. The Cougars finish the year at 0-10-4. With the second place finish the Spartans will have a bye into the second round of the Canada West play-offs, which are held in Victoria Oct. 30 - Nov. 2. TWU will play their first match on Saturday, November 1 at 2:15 p.m. "We are delighted to finish in second, but we realize that we still have a long way to go," added Roxburgh.

Match Notes: TWU's Wright wins the Canada West goal scoring and overall points crowns with 12 goals and 18 points...the Spartans Daniela Gerig (2nd year, Fort Langley, B.C.) finishes second to Wright in goal scoring with nine goals...TWU wins the team goal scoring, points and assist titles with 31 goals, 60 points and 29 assists...The Spartans finish second in goals against average with 0.71, trailing only UBC with 0.43...
