TWU Spartans (0) at the University of Victoria Vikes (1) - PK (4-3)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SHOOT-OUT GOES TO HOME TEAM
VICTORIA - The home town University of Victoria won their second consecutive match in a shootout and as a result were rewarded with the Canada West Championship after defeating the Trinity Western University Spartans 1-0 by outscoring the visitors 4-3 in penalty kicks.
Both side stepped up the intensity from the get go and battled each other for 120 minutes. Despite the lack of scoring, the game did not fail to entertain as the two top teams in the conference left their all on the field, and left the 200 plus at Centennial Stadium on their edge of their seat until the final shootout marker.
The best chance for a goal before the shootout came just five minutes into overtime off a free kick from the arc of the Vikes 18 meter box. The Spartans Rebecca Ferguson ripped a rocket from the set piece that soared over a wall of Vikes defenders and slammed square off the middle off the crossbar.
After surviving the near miss, the Vikes turned the momentum in their favour and looked destined to score the game winner in the 115th minute when striker Kendra Flock was sprung in alone behind the Spartans defense. The Calgary native took the pass and flicked the ball past Funk, only to watch her shot trickle just inches wide.
The Spartans out-shot the Vikes 26-24 on the day and forced Parker into making 14 saves to earn her seventh shutout of the season. Funk made nine stops for the loss.
Both the Spartans and Vikes will now set their sights on the National Championship. Joining the Canada West representatives in Langley are the Laurier Golden Hawks (OUA), Ottawa Gee-Gees (OUA), Brock Badgers (OUA), Montreal Carabins (QUA),) Cape Breton Capers (AUS) and Dalhousie Tigers (AUS).
The tournament will get underway Thursday Nov 6th in Langley, with the Vikes facing off against the AUS finalist Dalhousie Tigers. The host Spartans will get their tournament started when they entertain the Laurier Golden Hawks.
