FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
QUARTER #4: 2008 CIS women's soccer championship
Host Spartans control home field
Nov. 6, 2008
OTTAWA (CIS) - The Trinity Western University Spartans became the second Canada West team to qualify for the CIS women's soccer championship semi-finals when the defeated the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks 3-0 day Friday afternoon at TWU in Langley, B.C.
Championship website: www.cisport.ca/e/championships/m_soccer/2008
The Spartans goal scoring tandem of Nikki Wright (Cloverdale, B.C.) and Daniela Gerig (Fort Langley, B.C.) accounted for all of the scoring in the final quarter final match of the day. The number one and two goal scorers in Canada West have now scored 23 goals on the season in CW conference and play-offs.
Wright opened the scoring in the 15th minute on a fine individual effort. The CIS Rookie of the Year took the ball all the way from half on a breakaway, went around Laurier's Mal Woelley (Kinburn, Ont.) and slotted the ball into the open net.
Gerig got her first goal of the game in a few minutes later, 19th minute, to give the Spartans the early two goal margin. The lanky forward took a neat pass from Wright, that went across the goal area, and knocked it into the back of the Golden Hawks net.
Gerig got her second of the night in near the midway point of the second half, 63rd minute, to send the large partisan crowd into a celebration as the host team led 3-0. Gerig used a strong individual effort to split the Laurier defenders on the right side of the pitch before slotting the ball into the lower right side of the Golden Hawks net.
The Spartans will now head to the semi-final's for a match-up with rival University of Victoria Vikes. The game will be a rematch of the Canada West gold medal match, which the Vikes won 1-0 (4-3 PK) last week in Victoria. The Golden Hawks will now head to the consolation side for a match tomorrow afternoon against the Dalhousie Tigers.
