Spartans back in championship final after ousting Vikes in Shootout

LANGLEY, British Columbia (CIS) - The Trinity Western Spartans are returning to the CIS gold medal match after defeating the Canada West champion University of Victoria Vikes 6-5 in penalty kicks to earn the 1-0 victory Saturday evening at Trinity Western University in Langley, B.C.

"Both teams played really well, it was just an epic game and I'm just relieved and ecstatic to be on the right end of the score line," commented TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. "Obviously when we missed our penalty I thought that we were in trouble, but so many of our young kids held their nerves and were able perform...I'm so proud of our team."

The Vikes had two opportunities to win the match in the shootout, but the Spartans rookie keeper Kristen Funk (Calgary), who made seven saves, was up to the challenge and kept Victoria from getting the game winner to set up teammate Rebecca Fergusons (Calgary) game winning strike on TWU's eight attempt. "I'm so proud of Kristen she has been fantastic all season on our way to earn our way outright to nationals. She was tremendous tonight and she really kept us in it,"

The Vikes Shayla Behrens (Victoria) missed on Victoria's final attempt to give the Spartans the trilling shoot-out victory. The Spartans win reverses the outcome of the Canada West gold medal match, which the Vikes won in penalty kicks 4-3. TWU's Ferguson was one of the Spartans who missed in the Canada West finals shootout. "I'm so pleased for ‘Becca' to step forward and without any fear and hit a winner," commented Roxburgh.

Victoria had an advantage in the possession and location of play for most of the first half, but as the match progressed it became a very hard fought defensive battle between two top level teams. Even with the match being played on the large TWU pitch, 120 x 80, there was little room for either team to operate or be able to create quality chances.

"UVIC was the better team early on and then we started to respond," said Roxburgh. "But both teams defended really well and limited scoring opportunities."

Victoria's Stephanie Parker, like Funk had a solid match making the key stops when she need to. The rookie from Chemainus, B.C. made eight saves on the night, two of which came in the later half of the final overtime period.

The win means the Spartans, who won the gold medal in 2004, will play the Brock University Badgers in the gold medal match Sunday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. The Vikes will match up against the University de Montreal Carabins in Sunday's bronze medal match at 1 p.m. Both matches will be played on TWU's main field and can be seen live on SSN.
