FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
GOLD MEDAL: 2008 CIS women's soccer championship
SPARTANS WIN SECOND NATIONAL TITLE WITH 1-0 WIN OVER BADGERS
Nov. 9, 2008
LANGLEY, British Columbia (CIS) -Kayla Dilling (Winnipeg) scored the lone goal in the 41st minute to give the Trinity Western University Spartans a 1-0 victory over Brock University to claim their second CIS national title Sunday afternoon at the CIS women's soccer championships at Trinity Western University in Langley, B.C.
Championship website: www.cisport.ca/e/championships/w_soccer/2008
"I'm so proud of our players. They are a young group and they have matured very quickly over this year. We knew going into the final that even though others were saying it would be an easy game for us, we knew it wouldn't be," said TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. "Brock has beaten a number of good teams just to get to this game and we knew that they were capable of winning, especially when we were coming off of a long emotional win last night against Victoria."
The lone goal came off of a TWU corner kick in the 41st minute. TWU midfielder Rebecca Ferguson sent a perfect curling ball to the near post. Dilling went high in the air and beat Brook keeper Tiffany Scriver (Burlington, Ont.) to the ball to give the Spartans the eventual game winning goal.
"I'm so proud of Kayla. She was playing hurt. She was unbelievable all weekend," said Roxburgh.
The Spartans carried most of the play throughout the match, out shooting the Badgers 22-7.
Both keepers made spectacular saves at critical times to keep the match close. TWU's Kristen Funk (Calgary) made quality diving stops on Brock forward to maintain the Spartans lead, while Scriver kept the Badgers in the game on a number of occasions.
"Kristen has been unbelievable all year and she made some key saves to keep us in the game," commented Roxburgh on his first year keeper.
The Canada West finalist Spartans were ranked No. 6 coming into the tournament and made it to the gold medal match after a thrilling 1-0 (6-5 PK) win over the No. 4 University of Victoria in Saturday's second semi-final. TWU opened the tournament with a strong 3-0 win over Wilfrid Laurier Thursday night. The Brock Badgers qualified for the championship as the third team out of the OUA. They made it to the championship match after beating defending champions Cape Breton 2-1 in their opening match and then beating No. 1 University of Montreal 2-0 in the first semi-final.
TWU keeper Funk made four saves in the win, while Brock's Scriver made eight saves in the loss.
It is the Badgers first appearance at the CIS championship, and their first every championship medal.
It is the Spartans third appearance at the CIS championship and their second CIS title. They previously finished fifth in 2006 and won the school's first ever national title in 2004.
The match was broadcasted live on SSN.
