TWU Spartans (2) vs. the Simon Fraser University Clan (0)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SPARTANS BLANK CLAN IN FRIENDLY
LANGLEY, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University women's soccer team defeated the Simon Fraser University Clan 2-0 in a friendly match Saturday afternoon at Willoughby Park in Langley, B.C.
"It was a typical spring game where you are trying to get lots of players playing time and the opportunity to see some new looks from different positions," commented TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. "It was good to get the win, as anytime you play you want to come away with the win, but the better result was that we got a good game under our belt after a long lay-off."
TWU's Samantha Slack (Surrey, B.C.) opened the scoring 20 minutes into the match when she stole a pass from the Simon Fraser keeper to the outside back. Slack went in alone on the Clan net where she finished the play nicely to give the Spartans the lead.
The Spartans Rebecca Ferguson (Calgary) got the insurance goal in the 10th minute of the second half. Ferguson broke in down the right side of the park after beating the left back to go in alone on the SFU net. Ferguson's initial shot was stopped by the Clan keeper, but she was unable to hold on to the rebound, which Ferguson put through a maze of players and into the back of the SFU net.
Next up for the 2008 CIS Champion Spartans is the at the University of Victoria tournament on March 28 and March 29.
