TWU Spartans (1) vs. the University of British Columbia (2)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
THUNDERBIRDS TOP SPARTANS AT KEG SPRING CUP
VICTORIA - The Trinity Western University women's soccer team fell 2-1 to the University of British Columbia to open the Keg Spring Cup Saturday afternoon in Victoria.
"Other than two defensive errors UBC wasn't able to create a lot on us, but it is disappointing to lose as we didn't give a good account of ourselves," commented TWU head coach Graham Roxburgh. "We are a young team that needs to learn how to play with a little more fire and composure."
UBC's Lisa Furutani (North Vancouver) put a header into the Spartans net in 7th minutes to open the scoring. Furutani took advantage of a long throw-in that was flicked on past the TWU defenders. Furutani got past the Spartan defenders to head the ball past Kristen Funk (Calgary) and into the TWU net.
The Spartans settled down after the goal and started to put more pressure on the Thunderbirds back line. TWU's Daniela Gerig (Langley, B.C.) sent a long ball to forward Nikki Wright (Surrey, B.C.), who tried to lob UBC keeper Jaclyn Dunnett (Burnaby, B.C.). Dunnett made the good save on the initial shot but was unable to coral the rebound. Wright grabbed the rebound, spun and placed it into the Thunderbirds net to tie the match at 1-1 in the 31st minute.
Just before half Furutani got her second of the game when she intercepted a square ball by the Spartan defenders to go in alone on TWU's Funk and score the eventual game winner.
Neither team had strong chances in the second half as the Thunderbirds held on for the 2-1 win.
TWU will now play Sunday at 10 a.m. against the University of the Fraser Valley, who fell 2-1 to the University of Victoria in the other Saturday match. Sunday's Keg Spring Cup final between the Vikes and T-Birds kicks off at 2 p.m.
